ETA Hoffmann was not only a civil servant and a lawyer, but above all a dazzling artistic personality who regularly offended with her strong convictions and repeatedly had to defend himself against the politics that set limits to his artistic work.

In Offenbach's opera, the writer, musician and draftsman becomes the anti-hero of his own stories: In Les Contes d'Hoffmann , the titular hero is manipulated, artistic illusions under the name Olympia are presented to him and destroyed. Singers, including Hoffmann's lover Antonia, have to die if they pursue their art. And finally the poet finds himself in a field in which people sell themselves and their ideals - he loses his ability to reflect on himself.

Jacques Offenbach's Opéra fantastique is the last and the only serious opera by the "inventor" of French operetta. In a kaleidoscope-like manner, he interweaves social criticism, French sentiment, German romanticism, parodistic jokes and musical finesse into narratives about the artist's existence: They address the abysses, doubts, great ideas and crises of a bohemian who struggles for the right to exist, artistic freedom, influence, recognition and love got to.
