The muse climbs out of a barrel. Namely a wine barrel, about which the poet Hoffmann sings a song in Offenbach's last opera. Fatally intoxicated, he spins three stories about his unhappy love: to the dolled-up artist Olympia, the young girl Antonia and the courtesan Giulietta. Three women – or is it just one after all? Stella, the star in the opera sky, who celebrates success on stage as Donna Anna, while Hoffmann, who has meanwhile been completely destroyed, drowns in drunkenness at Lutter & Wegner. In LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, Jacques Offenbach, the undisputed king of opéra bouffe, struck a serious note in an unmistakable way. ETA Hoffmann's stories, skilfully woven into the opera's plot, form a panopticon of aesthetic concerns and soon reflect grotesquely,

The French theater director, opera director and costume designer Laurent Pelly brings his internationally successful production to Berlin. Darkly playful, in imaginative stage worlds and moving choral images, this production paints the poet Hoffmann's slide into delusion and intoxication in detail. At the podium stands Enrique Mazzola, who is already known to the audience of the Deutsche Oper Berlin as an outstanding interpreter of the French repertoire.
