Vznik samostatného československého státu patří k nejdůležitějším událostem našich dějin. K němu směřovaly snahy českých vlastenců a politiků po celé 19. století a podzim roku 1918 se stal jejich naplněním a začátkem nové éry našeho národa. Boj o českou státnost se stal neodmyslitelnou součástí umělecké tvorby a dal vzejít dílům, která se stala trvalým symbolem naší národní kultury. Takovým dílem ji i slavnostní zpěvohra Libuše Bedřicha Smetany (1824-1884) zachycující mýtus o bájné české kněžně. Opera, která vrcholí velkolepou scénou věštby budoucnosti českého národa, zazněla poprvé roku 1881 při otevření pražského Národního divadla. Bylo Smetanovým přáním, aby byla dílem určeným k "zvláště památným dnům" a tak se i stalo. Uvedení Libuše bylo vždy spjato se slavnostními okamžiky stejně jako s nejtěžšími dny českého národa.

Nová inscenace Smetanovy Libuše v provedení brněnského operního souboru a v režii jeho uměleckého šéfa Jiřího Heřmana vznikla u příležitosti oslav 100letého výročí naší státnosti. Pro její uvedení bylo vybráno místo, které v historii města Brna hraje nezastupitelnou roli areál Brněnských veletrhů a výstaviště, místo, jenž vděčí za svou existenci a rozvoj právě vzniku samostatné republiky. Jeho otevřením v květnu 1928 Výstavou soudobé kultury u příležitosti 10. výročí Československé republiky pod patronátem prezidenta Tomáše Garrigua Masaryka získalo Brno jeden z nejvýznamnějších funkcionalistických stavebních komplexů své doby. Celý program festivalu Janáček Brno 2018 směřuje k oslavám výročí naší státnosti a areál výstaviště tak bude během festivalu Janáček Brno 2018 hostit nejen představení Smetanovy Libuše, ale i díla Leoše Janáčka, největšího českého skladatele 20. století.

The creation of the independent Czechoslovak state is one of the most important events in our history. The efforts of Czech patriots and politicians throughout the 19th century were directed towards it, and the autumn of 1918 became their fulfillment and the beginning of a new era for our nation. The struggle for Czech statehood became an inherent part of artistic creation and gave birth to works that became permanent symbols of our national culture. Libuš Bedřich Smetana's (1824-1884) celebratory song drama depicting the myth of a mythical Czech princess is also such a work . The opera, which culminates in a spectacular scene predicting the future of the Czech nation, was performed for the first time in 1881 at the opening of the National Theater in Prague. It was Smetana's wish that it be a work intended for "especially memorable days", and so it happened. Introduction of Libušit has always been associated with festive moments as well as with the most difficult days of the Czech nation.

A new production of Smetana's Libušeperformed by the Brno Opera Ensemble and directed by its artistic director Jiří Heřman, it was created on the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of our statehood. For its launch, a place was chosen that plays an irreplaceable role in the history of the city of Brno, the Brno Fairs and Exhibition Center, a place that owes its existence and development to the creation of an independent republic. With its opening in May 1928 as an Exhibition of Contemporary Culture on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic under the patronage of President Tomáš Garrigu Masaryk, Brno acquired one of the most important functionalist building complexes of its time. The entire program of the Janáček Brno 2018 festival is aimed at celebrating the anniversary of our statehood, and the exhibition grounds will thus host not only the performance of Smetana Libuše during the Janáček Brno 2018 festival, but also the works of Leoš Janáček, the greatest Czech composer of the 20th century.
