The song matinee by baritone Peter Schöne and pianist Antonio Grimaldi on Sunday, March 6, 2022 (4 p.m., Modern Gallery) is all about Franz Schubert’s immensely versatile song creation. Apart from the most popular works, there are also pieces in the oeuvre of the Viennese composer that have a strong emotional pull, including the songs based on poems by Ernst Schulze, which were composed between 1825/1826.

 

Schulze was an extraordinarily successful poet during his lifetime, in whose work love poetry, descriptions of nature and patriotic echoes were mixed, creating an apparently irresistible mixture for his contemporaries. Derived from Schulze's poetic diary, which primarily focused on private experiences in his poetry, Schubert's setting in particular achieved sustained success, especially since these songs are a harbinger of the »Winterreise« composed in 1827 in terms of design and style.

 

Also on the program is Franz Schubert's last major composition, the collection, which was posthumously named Swan Song. Similar to the songs based on Schulze's poems, this collection of 14 songs is not linked by a concrete narrative thread, rather it is an emotional urgency that links the individual songs.
