The Hungarian harpsichordist and conductor György Vashegyi has been focusing on the eighteenth century for some time now. He is an authority on Jean-Philippe Rameau. In the Matinee he performs his successful Castor et Pollux .

Loyalty conflict
The tragédie lyrique Castor et Pollux was extensively revised by Rameau in 1754, but this Matinee contains the version of the first (Paris) performance of 1737. The classic story is about the twin brothers mentioned in the title, who get into a mutual conflict of loyalty over love and death. The work is a constant alternation of exciting recitatives, dazzling ballets and beautiful arias.
Rameau's most beautiful aria
Rameau's most beautiful aria ever sounds in the first act: 'Tristes apprêts', sung by the most important soprano role: that of Télaïre. Accompanied by an ever-decreasing melody line in the orchestra, she mourns the sudden death of her beloved Castor. There is also a breathtaking underworld scene, in which Phébé, Télaïre's co-star, mobilizes the dark forces almost like a sorceress. With his operas, Rameau laid the foundations for important developments in the second half of the eighteenth century, and his great influence ranged from Gluck to Berlioz.

De Hongaarse klavecinist en dirigent György Vashegyi richt zich al geruime tijd op de achttiende eeuw. Hij is een autoriteit op het terrein van Jean-Philippe Rameau. In de Matinee voert hij diens succesvolle Castor et Pollux uit.

Loyaliteitsconflict
De tragédie lyrique Castor et Pollux werd door Rameau in 1754 uitvoerig herzien, maar in deze Matinee klinkt de versie van de eerste (Parijse) uitvoering van 1737. Het klassieke verhaal handelt over de in de titel vermelde tweelingbroers, die in een wederzijds loyaliteitsconflict raken over liefde en dood. Het werk is een voortdurende afwisseling van spannende recitatieven, wervelende balletten en prachtige aria’s.
Rameaus mooiste aria
Rameaus mooiste aria ooit klinkt al in de eerste akte: 'Tristes apprêts', gezongen door de belangrijkste sopraanrol: die van Télaïre. Begeleid door een steeds weer dalende melodielijn in het orkest rouwt zij om de plotse dood van haar geliefde Castor. Ook is er een adembenemende onderwereldscène, waarin Phébé, de tegenspeelster van Télaïre, bijna als een tovenares de duistere machten mobiliseert. Rameau legt met zijn opera’s de grondslag voor belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw en zijn grote invloed reikt van Gluck tot Berlioz.
