In 1607 Monteverdi wrote his first opera in Mantua, setting standards that are still valid today. Nevertheless, he left the ducal court in 1613 and became Kapellmeister of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. He did not write any more operas for more than thirty years, although opera flourished as a public spectacle in Venice like nowhere else. The »Return of Odysseus« (1640), the now lost »Marriage of Aeneas« (1641) and the »Coronation of Poppea« (1643) appear in quick succession. For the very first time, an episode from history becomes the subject of an opera. Against the will of his teacher Seneca, Emperor Nero marries the beautiful courtesan Poppea. The sad end: the philosopher commits suicide, Nero's wife Ottavia goes into exile. But Monteverdi finds the right tone for all characters. The passion of the lovers touches you just as much as the grief of the evicted and the funny servant figures always make you laugh liberatingly.
