In politisch unruhigen Zeiten wird Elsa von Brabant angeklagt, ihren Bruder, den Thronfolger des Herzogtums, umgebracht zu haben. In Elsas Not kommt ihr ein geheimnisvoller Ritter zu Hilfe, der unter einer Bedingung für sie streitet: Nie soll sie nach seinem Namen und seiner Herkunft fragen. Die Anschuldigungen gegen Elsa werden als Machtintrigen entlarvt, doch das Frageverbot und die Ungewissheit über ihren Retter lasten schwer auf Elsa...

Unzufrieden mit den gesellschaftlichen Realitäten seiner Zeit, ging Richard Wagner 1848 selber als Revolutionär auf die Barrikaden. In Lohengrin brachte er seine politischen Utopien von einer anderen Weltordnung zur selben Zeit auf künstlerische Weise zum Ausdruck.

Andreas Homoki verlegte die Handlung in seiner Inszenierung in ein abgelegenes Bergdorf, in dem sowohl die politische Situation wie auch das Eintreten des Lohengrin-Wunders auch aus heutiger Zeit glaubhaft erscheinen. Am Pult steht in dieser Wiederaufnahme Generalmusikdirektor Fabio Luisi. In der alle Kräfte fordernden Titelpartie ist Brandon Jovanovich zu erleben, der nach internationalen Erfolgen als Stolzing, Siegmund und Lohengrin nun erstmals auch in Zürich in einer Wagner-Partie zu hören ist.

In politically turbulent times, Elsa von Brabant is accused of having killed her brother, the heir apparent to the duchy. In Elsa's distress, a mysterious knight comes to her aid, fighting for her on one condition: she should never ask his name or where he comes from. The accusations against Elsa are exposed as power intrigues, but the ban on questions and the uncertainty about her savior weigh heavily on Elsa...

Dissatisfied with the social realities of his time, Richard Wagner himself went to the barricades in 1848 as a revolutionary. In Lohengrin he artistically expressed his political utopias of another world order at the same time.

In his production, Andreas Homoki moved the action to a remote mountain village, where both the political situation and the occurrence of the Lohengrin miracle appear believable, even from today's perspective. General Music Director Fabio Luisi is on the podium in this revival. Brandon Jovanovich can be heard in the title role, which requires all your strength. After international successes as Stolzing, Siegmund and Lohengrin, he can now be heard in a Wagner role for the first time in Zurich.
