"Vesuvius is smoking, the eruption is imminent", so Gaetano Donizetti lamented shortly before the world premiere of "Lucia di Lammermoor" in Naples in 1835, which he saw endangered for a short time by a catastrophe. The emotional glow that Donizetti kindled in his new work would have surpassed any force of nature by far. The young Lucia Ashton loves Edgardo, the last offspring of the Ravenswood family, who are at odds with the Ashtons. But not only this smoldering feud weighs on luck, because Lucia's brother Enrico also makes his sister the plaything of his very personal goals. In order to rehabilitate himself, he married her to the rich Lord Arturo Bucklaw. Edgardo then accuses her of betraying her love. Lucia breaks and goes mad ...

Even if Donizetti's score is literally overflowing with melodic and dramatic ideas, it is especially this mad scene that made “Lucia di Lammermoor” famous. With endless coloratura, the prima donna of the opera sings herself into another world - here the bel canto style is brought to a climax.

The direction is in the hands of Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, whose productions have shaped the Aalto Theater from the first season. After the celebrated anniversary production of “Cain and Abel”, the return of which is planned for the second half of the season, his 21st Essen opera production is now on the program with “Lucia di Lammermoor”. In splendid furnishings and with captivating character direction, he reveals how the power structures, especially within one's own family, can destroy a person.
