Luisa liebt Rodolfo, doch dieser Liebe steht entsetzlich viel im Wege. Da wäre zuerst Rodolfos adliger Stand, aus dem heraus er unmöglich ein Bürgermädchen wie Luisa heiraten kann. Sein Vater, der Graf von Walter, hat bereits eine geeignete Braut für ihn ausgesucht und will alles dafür tun, die wahre Liebe seines Sohnes zu verhindern. Da kommt der intrigante Schlossverwalter Wurm gerade recht, der, von Luisa abgewiesen, beide Väter gegeneinander aufstachelt, bis Vater Miller im Gefängnis landet. Um ihn zu retten, wird Luisa zu einem Brief gezwungen, in dem sie ihre angebliche Liebe zu Wurm gesteht. Dieser Brief wird Rodolfo zugespielt. Am Ende sind die beiden Liebenden tot, und die Väter stehen vor einem Scherbenhaufen.

„Kabale und Liebe“ nannte Friedrich Schiller sein bürgerliches Trauerspiel von 1783 so knapp und treffend, in dem die unbescholtene Luise Millerin von menschlicher und gesellschaftlicher Niedertracht zugrunde gerichtet wird. Dank der 1827 erschienenen italienischen Schiller-Übersetzungen von Andrea Maffei war Verdi das Theaterstück bekannt. Immer wieder griff er in seiner langen Karriere auf Stoffe von Friedrich Schiller zurück und entdeckte darin die große Oper. Jeder andere Komponist hätte aus diesem Stoff vielleicht ein Rührstück gemacht, nicht so Verdi, der das dramatische Potential der Figuren und der Handlung erkannte und musikalisch voll ausschöpfte. Mit „Luisa Miller“ schlug Verdi 1849 zwischen „Macbeth“ und „Rigoletto“ ein neues Kapitel seines Schaffens auf, in dem er seine ganze Gestaltungskunst in unverwechselbare, auf psychologische Ausnahmesituationen
zugeschnittene Arien und Szenen legte, in welchen die Charaktere über sich und die unmittelbare Welt hinauswachsen.

Christof Loy, seit langer Zeit einer der stilbildenden deutschen Opernregisseure, inszenierte im Sommer 2020 „Luisa Miller“ beim Glyndebourne Festival. Die in berückender Weise auf die Charaktere fokussierte Inszenierung wurde von Presse und Publikum hochgeschätzt und kommt nun an die Oper Köln. Mit Roberto Rizzi Brignoli steht ein ausgewiesener Fachmann für Italienische Oper am Pult.

Luisa loves Rodolfo, but an awful lot stands in the way of this love. First there is Rodolfo's aristocratic status, from which it is impossible for him to marry a middle-class girl like Luisa. His father, Count von Walter, has already chosen a suitable bride for him and wants to do everything to prevent his son from finding true love. The scheming castle manager Wurm comes in handy, who, rejected by Luisa, incites both fathers against each other until father Miller ends up in prison. To save him, Luisa is forced to write a letter in which she confesses her alleged love for Wurm. This letter is passed to Rodolfo. In the end, the two lovers are dead and the fathers are left in ruins.

Friedrich Schiller called his bourgeois tragedy from 1783 “Intrigue and Love” so succinctly and aptly, in which the blameless Luise Millerin is ruined by human and social infamy. Thanks to Andrea Maffei's Italian translation of Schiller, published in 1827, Verdi was familiar with the play. In the course of his long career he repeatedly fell back on material by Friedrich Schiller and discovered great opera in it. Any other composer might have made a touching play out of this material, not so Verdi, who recognized the dramatic potential of the characters and the plot and exploited it to the full musically. With "Luisa Miller" in 1849, between "Macbeth" and "Rigoletto", Verdi opened a new chapter in his creative work, in which he applied his entire creative art to unmistakable, exceptional psychological situations
tailored arias and scenes in which the characters grow beyond themselves and the immediate world.

Christof Loy, who has long been one of the most influential German opera directors, staged "Luisa Miller" at the Glyndebourne Festival in the summer of 2020. The enchantingly character-focused production was highly acclaimed by press and audience alike and is now coming to Cologne Opera. With Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, a proven expert in Italian opera will be at the podium.
