C’est en 1849, dans sa ville natale de Busseto, que Verdi écrit Luisa Miller, son quatorzième opéra, dont l’histoire a pour cadre le Tyrol du XVIIe siècle et raconte les amours tragiques entre Luisa, fille d’un ancien soldat, et Rodolfo, le fils du comte Walter.

En 1849, à Busseto en Italie, Verdi doit faire face aux préjugés des habitants, qui rejettent sa liaison avec Giuseppina Strepponi – d’où, peut-être, le thème de l’amour interdit dans Luisa Miller. Composé sur un livret de Salvatore Cammarano, et créé en 1849 au Teatro San Carlo de Naples, cet opéra est un tournant dans la production de Verdi. Il ouvre la voie vers sa célèbre « trilogie populaire » : Rigoletto, Le Trouvère et La Traviata, aussi bien du point de vue musical que du livret. Fini les sujets épiques, Verdi s’intéresse à présent au « drame bourgeois.

Inspirée de la pièce de Schiller, Kabale und Liebe (« Intrigue et Amour »), Luisa Miller prend place dans un village tyrolien du XVIIe siècle et met en scène l’amour impossible entre Luisa, fille de l’ancien soldat Miller, et Rodolfo, fils du comte Walter, destiné à épouser contre son gré la duchesse Federica. Rodolfo résiste et menace son père de révéler qu’il a assassiné son propre cousin pour prendre sa place. Mais, aidé par l’intendant Wurm, aussi amoureux de Luisa, le comte Walter fait arrêter Miller et contraint la jeune fille à écrire un billet dans lequel elle affirme avoir trahi Rodolfo. À la fin de l’opéra, dans un geste désespéré, Rodolfo s’empoisonne avec Luisa, juste avant qu’elle lui avoue son sacrifice.

It was in 1849, in his native town of Busseto, that Verdi wrote Luisa Miller , his fourteenth opera, whose story is set in 17th century Tyrol and tells of the tragic love between Luisa, daughter of a former soldier, and Rodolfo, Count Walter's son.

Inspired by Schiller's play Kabale und Liebe ("Intrigue and Love"), Luisa Miller takes place in a 17th century Tyrolean village and depicts the impossible love between Luisa, daughter of former soldier Miller, and Rodolfo , son of Count Walter, destined to marry Duchess Federica against his will. Rodolfo resists and threatens his father to reveal that he murdered his own cousin to take his place. But, helped by the steward Wurm, also in love with Luisa, Count Walter has Miller arrested and forces the young girl to write a note in which she claims to have betrayed Rodolfo. At the end of the opera, in a desperate gesture, Rodolfo poisons himself with Luisa, just before she confesses her sacrifice to him.
