The opera was written in 1904, in this stage version staged in Perm in 2010

It is hard to believe that the first performance of this famous opera failed miserably, and only the help of the great maestro Arturo Toscanini, who forced the composer to shorten the opera and break it into three acts, returned Madama Butterfly to the opera stage. This is the story of a young geisha who is ready to renounce both her family and her religion for the sake of a frivolous Yankee in the form of a naval officer who knows that a marriage in Japan can be terminated without even informing his wife. The melodramatic plot usually makes even the most callous and cynical viewers cry. Puccini intertwined Italian and Japanese melodies, creating one of the most exotic and popular operas in the world repertoire.

Despite the fact that the action of the performance was transferred from Japan at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to America in the 1920s, the directors found an ingenious way to preserve the Japanese flavor of history

Трудно поверить, что первое исполнение этой знаменитой оперы провалилось с треском, и только помощь великого маэстро Артуро Тосканини, который заставил композитора сократить оперу и разбить ее на три акта, вернуло «Мадам Баттерфлай» на оперные подмостки. Это история юной гейши, готовой отречься и от своей родни, и от своей религии ради легкомысленного янки в форме морского офицера, который заведомо знает, что брак в Японии можно расторгнуть, даже не ставя жену в известность. Мелодраматический сюжет обычно заставляет плакать даже самых черствых и циничных зрителей. Пуччини переплел итальянские и японские мелодии, создав одну из самых экзотических и популярных опер мирового репертуара.

Несмотря на то что действие спектакля перенесено из Японии рубежа XIX—ХХ веков в Америку 1920-х, постановщики нашли остроумный способ сохранить японский колорит истории.
