„Der Mann von La Mancha“ aus dem Jahr 1966 ist nicht nur einer der ganz großen Broadway-Musicalklassiker, er basiert auch auf einem der bedeutendsten Romane aller Zeiten: Miguel de Cervantes’ „Don Quixote de La Mancha“. Das berührende Musical erzählt von der reinigenden Kraft des Theaters und dem „unmöglichen Traum“ von einer besseren Welt: Der Dichter Cervantes wird von der spanischen Inquisition wegen ketzerischer Äußerungen verhaftet und landet gemeinsam mit seinem Diener in einem Gefängnis voller Mörder, Diebe, Huren und Betrüger.

In order to assert himself against the leader of the inmates, who stole not only his belongings but also his valuable “Don Quixote” manuscript, Cervantes decided to replay the story of his novel. He himself slips into the role of the old nobleman Alonso Quijana, who, after reading a number of heroic novels, thinks he is the errant knight Don Quixote and goes out with his servant Sancho Panza to fight evil. Cervantes increasingly entangles his fellow prisoners in the fantasy game and infects them with Don Quixote's unshakable idealism.
