We conclude our series of portraits of world-class baritones with Matthias Goerne, the master of verbatim euphony. The expressive artist is an icon of lieder singing. In his Essen recital he devotes himself entirely to the soulful work of Robert Schumann. In addition to the associative Eichendorff song cycle, which reflects the abysses and ecstasies of his epoch, songs from Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister", the elegiac "Poems of Queen Maria Stuart" and the impressive ballad "The Lion Bride" can also be experienced. It was always important to Schumann to "recreate the poem with its smallest traits in the finer musical material". Who could accompany all this better on the piano than the sensitive pianist (and artistic director of the Salzburg Festival) Markus Hinterhäuser!
