The world premiere of the opera Mazeppa by Pyotr Tchaikovsky took place at the Bolshoi Theatre on the 3rd of February (old style) 1884. The production was spectacular also thanks to the cast. According to the brother of the composer, Modest Tchaikovsky, “never has a new Russian opera in Moscow been staged more precisely in term of the consistency of style and detailing”. Emiliya Pavlovskaya (Maria) and Bogomir Korsov (Mazeppa) were particularly successful amongst the soloists.

Further recreations and new productions of the opera at the Bolshoi followed regularly: over almost one and a half centuries, there have been seven of them. The presence of Mazeppa on the Historic Stage is natural: the opera is written for voices of large range and is incredibly difficult for singers (the parts are comparable to Wagnerian). The outstanding artists of the Bolshoi performed in this opera: Panteleimon Nortsov, Alexei Ivanov, Pavel Lisitsian, Yuri Mazurok (Mazeppa), Ksenia Derzhinskaya, Tamara Milashkina, Nina Rautio (Maria), Ivan Petrov, Artur Aisen, Evgeny Nesterenko (Kochubey), Nadezhda Obukhova, Vera Davydova, Irina Arkhipova (Lyubov), Georgy Nelepp and Vladimir Atlantov (Andrei).

The libretto, based on Pushkin’s poem Poltava, written by poet and critic Viktor Burenin, was originally intended for Carl Davydov. The concept of Davydov was never realised and in 1881 he passed the text on to Tchaikovsky. The changes that the composer made in the libretto were so significant that they can allow us to consider him at least a co-author. (An authoritative researcher of the works by Tchaikovsky, Polina Vaidman, thought that “all the documents from the creative archive, which recorded the composer’s work on Mazeppa show that the text of the libretto he wrote himself”).

Pushkin’s Poltava inspired the composer to create a musical canvas about the death of the powerful grandee Vasily Kochubey’s family (his execution at the end of the second act becomes a large-scale culmination of the opera). A similar tragic ending awaits every character without exception: their lives, idyllic in the first scenes, are being ruined irretrievably by the time we approach the finale.

Starting work on the opera, Tchaikovsky was worried by the “overly dark shades of the whole libretto”, as well as by its plot, which committed him to creating an epic canvas with real historical figures and events: Peter the Great, Carl XII, scenes of the Battle of Poltava… As a result, all scenes with royalty were excluded from the opera and “the Battle of Poltava” became a significant but, at heart, an additional episode, which was realised by exclusively orchestral colours and a finale that separated it from the previous action. Some other changes and additions also took place: there is a daring song by a drunk Cossack prior to the tragic execution scene, while the ending features a lullaby by Maria, who has descended into insanity, to the dead body of Andrei, a Cossack who was in love with her, which sounds at once both moving and terrifying.

The atmosphere of sounds in the opera appears from a combination of soft intonations of the Southern Slavic speech, which is heard around magnificent cherry orchards and quiet rivers, and a bloody tragedy, unfolding against this background. Having started the new work, the composer emphasised the lyrical component of the plot. The major love duet of Mazeppa and Maria from the second act was written first. The arias of Maria, Andrei and Mazeppa became the lyrical culminations. (The famous monologue of the main character “Oh, Maria” was created upon request by Bogomir Korsov, when the work on the opera had already been finished). As a result, the scenes of dispute were set off by the lyricism of romance and landscape, and the treacherous nature of the hetman was softened by the passionate music, which was warmed by the tenderness towards Maria.

Tchaikovsky confessed there was no other writing that was as hard to compose as this opera. Naturally, there was less enthusiasm in his work to start with, less of a spontaneous and intuitive approach than we can see in the cases of Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. However, this circumstance also had some positive outcomes: as a result, we have a true masterpiece, which perfectly fits the “matrix” of romantic opera. The plot of Poltava provided the composer with material for huge duet scenes of disputes (comparable to Aida by Verdi), a classical love triangle (Maria, Andrei and Mazeppa), large scale choral episodes, and finally, for an astonishing climax: the descent into insanity of the main female character and her enlightened departure (let us remember Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti or the future The Tsar’s Bride by Rimsky-Korsakov).

After the first concert performances, which were held with great success in March 2020, the opera finally returned to the Historic Stage. The new production on stage of the Bolshoi Theatre was realised by chief conductor Tugan Sokhiev, director Evgeny Pisarev and designer Zinovy Margolin. Having kept the outline of the plot intact, the authors of the production gradually change the historical background of the events: “The production is a journey through time: to begin with, it is 1709, then World War One and the Civil War, World War Two and then the current situation” (Evgeny Pisarev). This way the story, which was first told by Pushkin and then by Tchaikovsky, reveals an old but such topical perception of Ukraine as a “territory of anxiety”. The chain of tragic events is crowned by the Christian all forgiving finale.

Мировая премьера оперы «Мазепа» Петра Чайковского состоялась в Большом театре 3 февраля 1884 года. Постановка была блестящей как по своему сценическому оформлению, так и по составу исполнителей. По словам брата композитора Модеста Чайковского, «никогда ещё новая русская опера в Москве не была обставлена более тщательно в смысле выдержанности стиля и отделки подробностей». Среди солистов особенный успех имели Эмилия Павловская (Мария) и Богомир Корсов (Мазепа).

Впоследствии эта опера регулярно появлялась в репертуаре Большого театра: на протяжении почти полутора столетий она пережила семь постановок и возобновлений. Закономерно, что в настоящее время спектакль идёт именно на Исторической сцене: опера написана в расчёте на большие голоса и невероятно сложна для певцов (их партии вполне сопоставимы с вагнеровскими). В заглавной партии выступали легендарные артисты: Пантелеймон Норцов, Алексей Иванов, Павел Лисициан, Юрий Мазурок, в партии Марии — Ксения Держинская, Тамара Милашкина, Нина Раутио, Кочубея — Иван Петров, Артур Эйзен, Евгений Нестеренко, Любови — Надежда Обухова, Вера Давыдова, Ирина Архипова, Андрея — Георгий Нэлепп и Владимир Атлантов...

Либретто по пушкинской «Полтаве», написанное поэтом и критиком Виктором Бурениным, первоначально предназначалось для Карла Давыдова. Поэма Пушкина вдохновила композитора на создание музыкального полотна о гибели семьи могущественного вельможи Василия Кочубея. Его казнь в окончании второго действия становится масштабной кульминацией оперы. Такой же трагический исход ждёт всех без исключения героев. Их жизнь к мрачному финалу рушится безвозвратно.

Чайковский поначалу был смущён как «слишком мрачной окраской всего либретто», так и обязывающим к написанию эпического полотна сюжетом с реальными историческими лицами и событиями — Петром Великим, Карлом XII, картиной Полтавской битвы. В итоге из оперы оказались исключены сцены с участием коронованных особ, а «Полтавская битва» стала значимым, но выполненным сугубо оркестровыми красками и по сути вставным батальным эпизодом, отделяющим финал от всего предыдущего развития. Одновременно были сделаны другие изменения и дополнения: трагической сцене казни предпослана лихая песня пьяного казака (один из прообразов будущей песни Задрипанного мужичонки в опере «Леди Макбет Мценского уезда» Дмитрия Шостаковича), а в завершении оперы трогательно и одновременно страшно звучит колыбельная обезумевшей Марии над телом влюблённого в неё казака Андрея.

Звуковая атмосфера рождается из сочетания интонаций мягкой южнославянской речи, раздающейся в окружении роскошных черешневых садов и тихих рек, и разыгрывающейся на этом фоне кровавой трагедии. Начав сочинение, композитор переакцентировал его в сторону лирики. Первым был написан большой любовный дуэт Мазепы и Марии из второго акта. Лирическими кульминациями стали арии Марии, Андрея и Мазепы (его знаменитый монолог «О, Мария» был написан уже после окончания работы над оперой по просьбе Богомира Корсова). В итоге конфликтные сцены оказались оттенены любовной и пейзажной лирикой, а коварный нрав гетмана смягчён страстной, согретой нежностью к Марии музыкой.

Чайковский признавался, что ни одно большое сочинение на давалось ему так трудно, как эта опера. Действительно, в его работе над ней поначалу было меньше увлечения, меньше стихийного и интуитивного, чем в случае «Евгения Онегина» и «Пиковой дамы». Однако это обстоятельство имело и положительные «последствия»: в результате, появился настоящий шедевр, идеально соответствовавший «матрице» романтической оперы. Сюжет «Полтавы» дал композитору материал для больших конфликтных дуэтных сцен (сравнимых с «Аидой» Верди), классического любовного треугольника (Мария, Андрей, Мазепа), масштабных хоровых эпизодов, наконец, для потрясающего финала — сцене сумасшествия и просветлённого ухода главной героини (вспомним «Лючию ди Ламмермур» Доницетти или будущую «Царскую невесту» Римского-Корсакова).

После концертных исполнений, с успехом прошедших в марте 2020 года, опера в очередной раз вернулась на Историческую сцену. Эта постановка была осуществлена на тот момент главным дирижёром театра маэстро Туганом Сохиевым, режиссёром Евгением Писаревым и сценографом Зиновием Марголиным. Полностью сохраняя сюжетную канву, авторы спектакля постепенно меняют исторический фон событий: «Постановка — как путешествие во времени: сначала это 1709 год, затем Первая мировая и Гражданская войны, Вторая мировая война и события сегодняшнего дня» (Евгений Писарев). Тем самым в рассказанной Пушкиным и вслед за ним Чайковским истории «высвечивается» давнее и до боли актуальное для наших дней восприятие Украины как «территории тревоги». Цепь трагических событий венчает по-христиански всепрощающий финал…
