"Mefistofele" begins with a prologue in heaven, accompanied by a tender and pious soundscape. Things soon come back down to earth as the story turns to Faust and his famous dilemma. Abdrazakov (Mephistopheles) and Vargas (Faust) both give memorable performances, thanks above all to their powerful, sonorous arias. Robert Carsen's intelligent staging ranges from the bright and colorful to the gloomy and overcast, resulting in a truly spectacular piece of theater.
