Composed on the death of the writer Alessandro Manzoni, the Requiem is one of the works in which Verdi put most of himself. Australian conductor Simone Young takes up the challenge of this alternately moving and terrifying fresco, which marks the Lyon debut of the rising star of the Verdian tenors, Freddie De Tommaso.

An opera in the robe of an ecclesiastic" : it is in these ironic terms that the German conductor Hans von Bülow described Verdi's Requiem. But we cannot blame the author of La traviatato sometimes look for the dramatic effect in it: it is on the contrary what makes all the singularity of this score. Verdi sublimates the deeply poetic text of the Catholic Mass for the Dead, translates its wild cries like its luminous hope, goes from a tearful solo to shattering tuttis. But, beyond its theatrical appearance, this monument translates a very personal expression of faith and plunges the listener into an intimate confrontation with life and death. We begin with a plea, we are shaken by a Dantesque vision of the Apocalypse and we escape little by little from darkness and anguish to gain eternal light. This grandiose score has been entrusted to the Australian conductor Simone Young, a great specialist in the lyrical repertoire, who has just been appointed head of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Composé à la mort de l’écrivain Alessandro Manzoni, le Requiem est l’une des œuvres où Verdi mit le plus de lui-même. La cheffe australienne Simone Young relève le défi de cette fresque tour à tour bouleversante et terrifiante, qui signe les débuts lyonnais de la star montante des ténors verdiens, Freddie De Tommaso.

«Un opéra en robe d’ecclésiastique» : c’est en ces termes ironiques que le chef d’orchestre allemand Hans von Bülow qualifia le Requiem de Verdi. Mais nous ne saurions reprocher à l’auteur de La traviata d’y rechercher parfois l’effet dramatique : c’est au contraire ce qui fait toute la singularité de cette partition. Verdi sublime le texte profondément poétique de la messe des morts catholique, traduit ses cris éperdus comme son espérance lumineuse, passe d’un solo éploré à des tuttis fracassants. Mais, au-delà de son apparence théâtrale, ce monument traduit une expression très personnelle de la foi et plonge l’auditeur dans une confrontation intime avec la vie et la mort. On commence par une supplique, on est secoué par une vision dantesque de l’Apocalypse et on s’échappe peu à peu des ténèbres et de l’angoisse pour gagner la lumière éternelle. Cette partition grandiose est confiée à la cheffe australienne Simone Young, grande spécialiste du répertoire lyrique, tout juste nommée à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique de Sydney. Autour d’elle est réuni un brillant plateau où l’on remarque tout particulièrement le ténor anglo-italien Freddie De Tommaso, devenu la coqueluche des grandes scènes lyriques internationales après sa moisson de prix au Concours Francisco-Viñas de Barcelone 2018.
