Messa da Requiem Verdi

The last concert of this artistic season conducted by maestro Giancarlo Guerrero will be a meeting with one of the greatest choral masterpieces of the 19th century. It is true that the author of this work gained fame by writing compositions belonging to genres other than sacred, but this does not mean that Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi is one of the less successful. On the contrary!

The German conductor Hans von Bülow described Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem as "an opera disguised in liturgical garb." Although this statement was intended to depreciate this work, it is actually an accurate (and not at all offensive) summary of the style of the work written by the Italian. After all, he went down in the history of music primarily as the author of numerous operas, and other compositions remain somewhat on the margins of his output. No wonder then that the virtuosic, expressive vocal style characteristic of operas also penetrated into the funeral mass - to the parts of four soloists and the choir. The monumental, one-and-a-half-hour composition consists of seven basic elements, which can be divided into even smaller sections.

Throughout his life, the artist declared himself to be an agnostic, anti-clerical and a person staying away from the institutions of the Church. The genesis of his Messa da Requiemwas purely personal. The creator decided to celebrate with it the memory of the writer Alessandro Mazzoni. The premiere, conducted by Verdi, took place in May 1874, on the first anniversary of the writer's death, in the church of San Marco in his hometown of Milan. A few days later, the mass also sounded at La Scala, and then in Paris, Vienna and London. In each of these cities, the Requiem aroused great public interest. No wonder, because it is a very effective and suggestive piece, written in a communicative style. Lyrical episodes are adjacent to fragments of great dramatic tension. This music expresses feelings of horror, rage, desperation, fear and doubt with great force and panache. The solution is to accept the fate leading to catharsis. Verdi's work quickly gained great popularity and is nowMozart's Requiem , for the most frequently performed funeral masses.

Ostatni w tym sezonie artystycznym koncert pod batutą maestra Giancarla Guerrero będzie spotkaniem z jednym z największych arcydzieł chóralnych XIX wieku. Co prawda autor tego utworu sławę zdobył, pisząc kompozycje należące do innych gatunków niż sakralne, ale nie znaczy to bynajmniej, że Messa da Requiem autorstwa Giuseppe Verdiego należy do mniej udanych. Jest wręcz przeciwnie!

Niemiecki dyrygent Hans von Bülow określił Messa da Requiem Giuseppe Verdiego mianem „opery przebranej w liturgiczne szaty”. Chociaż stwierdzenie to miało na celu zdeprecjonowanie tego dzieła, to tak naprawdę jest trafnym (i wcale nie obraźliwym) podsumowaniem stylistyki utworu napisanego przez Włocha. Przeszedł on przecież do historii muzyki przede wszystkim jako autor licznych oper, a inne kompozycje pozostają niejako na marginesie jego dorobku. Nic więc dziwnego że wirtuozowski, ekspresyjny styl wokalny charakterystyczny dla oper przeniknął także do mszy żałobnej – do partii czterech solistów oraz chóru. Monumentalna, trwająca półtorej godziny kompozycja składa się z siedmiu zasadniczych ogniw, które można wszakże podzielić na jeszcze mniejsze odcinki.

Artysta przez całe życie deklarował się jako agnostyk, był antyklerykałem i osobą trzymającą się z dala od instytucji Kościoła. Geneza jego Messa da Requiem miała podłoże czysto osobiste. Twórca zdecydował się uczcić za jej pomocą pamięć pisarza Alessandra Mazzoniego. Prawykonanie pod batutą Verdiego miało miejsce w maju 1874 roku w pierwszą rocznicę śmierci literata w kościele San Marco w jego rodzinnym Mediolanie. Kilka dni później msza zabrzmiała również w La Scali, a następnie w Paryżu, Wiedniu i Londynie. W każdym z tych miast Requiem budziło wielkie zainteresowanie publiczności. Nic w tym dziwnego, jest to bowiem utwór bardzo efektowny i sugestywny, napisany w komunikatywnym stylu. Odcinki liryczne sąsiadują w nim z fragmentami o wielkim napięciu dramatycznym. Muzyka ta z wielką siłą i rozmachem wyraża uczucia grozy, wściekłości, desperacji, lęku i zwątpienia. Rozwiązaniem jest pogodzenie się z losem prowadzące do katharsis. Dzieło Verdiego szybko zyskało wielką popularności i należy obecnie, razem z Requiem Mozarta, do najczęściej wykonywanych mszy żałobnych.
