Armida è stata l’opera di maggior successo composta da Haydn. Al servizio della corte degli Esterházy, il compositore vi si dedicò nel 1783 e l’opera andò in scena per la prima volta ad Eisenstadt il 26 febbraio 1784. Il principe Nicolaus ne fu particolarmente rapito, tanto da richiedere un numero impressionante di riprese, oltre cinquanta, negli anni successivi. Il soggetto è tratto dalla Gerusalemme liberata, la trama si evolve attorno ai tormenti emotivi della protagonista, la maga musulmana Armida, e di Rinaldo, eroe dell’esercito cristiano, che già avevano ispirato le omonime opere di Monteverdi, Lully, Vivaldi, Händel, Gluck, Salieri e altri ancora. Haydn è stato uno dei compositori che hanno maggiormente influito sullo sviluppo del genere sinfonia, anche nel contesto operistico è evidente la sua predisposizione alla scrittura orchestrale. L’orchestra ha infatti significativa importanza nei momenti di accompagnamento che si susseguono tra arie e recitativi, per emergere definitivamente nei brani interamente ad essa dedicati, ovvero l’ouverture e la scena iniziale del terzo atto. Con questa ouverture, il compositore unisce al suo ormai più che solido sinfonismo una vena spiccatamente drammatica, per risolve al meglio il ruolo introduttivo all’azione. Armida è stata spesso definita un’opera ‘riformata’, in riferimento alla riforma gluckiana dell’opera. Secondo Gluck, era fondamentale che l’ouverture fosse del tutto pertinente all’azione, ovvero che il contenuto musicale fosse impiegato esclusivamente per anticipare i temi e gli affetti che poi avrebbero definito il contenuto drammaturgico. Haydn segue di fatto questo principio, scrivendo un’ouverture che ha ragione di essere eseguita anche autonomamente, ma che trova la sua principale dimensione come parte di un’unità drammaturgica di grande impatto.

Il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra K. 466 è stato composto da Mozart nel 1785. Il compositore si era ormai completamente affermato anche a Vienna, poteva quindi finalmente dedicarsi ad una ricerca molto più sperimentale e personale in tutti gli ambiti musicali. Il genere del concerto per pianoforte e orchestra era stato particolarmente congeniale all’introduzione del compositore al pubblico viennese, era infatti egli stesso ad esibirsi al pianoforte mostrando insieme il suo talento compositivo e il suo carisma da interprete. Il Concerto n. 20 ha avuto un ruolo singolarmente importante nello sviluppo di questo genere, esprimendo grandi innovazioni sia nella scrittura pianistica sia, in particolare, nel rapporto tra pianoforte e orchestra. Qui l’incipit in re minore dell’Allegro coglie già di sorpresa l’ascoltatore, abituato ad aperture in tonalità maggiori, a delineare un carattere di grande intensità e tragicità. È chiaro, sin dal primo movimento, quanto la dimensione d’insieme e quella solistica entrino in dialogo, talvolta anche in contrasto, come mai era successo prima, determinando un piano quasi drammaturgico. Questo tratto sarà di particolare ispirazione per Beethoven e per i compositori romantici, che spesso frequenteranno il genere del concerto per pianoforte e orchestra, via via sempre più popolare nel corso dell’Ottocento. Sarà Beethoven stesso, grande estimatore del Concerto n. 20, a scrivere una cadenza finale per l’Allegro, ormai diventata canonica. Il secondo movimento, una romanza, si distacca molto dal primo nella sua semplicità tematica, il tema è qui presentato dal pianoforte, e poi ripreso dall’insieme; rimane centrale il ‘botta e risposta’ tra pianoforte e orchestra, in questo caso attraverso una melodia lineare e dalla forte carica espressiva. Il Rondò riprende il carattere più sanguigno dell’Allegro, con un ritmo incalzante e una maggior tensione, che sfocia nella sezione Allegro assai in re maggiore, tonalità con cui Mozart sfodera un ulteriore e sorprendente contrasto finale. Il Concerto n. 22, K. 482 è stato composto nello stesso anno, a distanza di pochi mesi dal n. 20. In questo caso, non è l’intensità drammatica a prevalere; sia il primo sia il terzo movimento, ricchi di inventiva tematica e della continua contrapposizione tra Tutti e Solo, hanno una vivacità più solare. Al pianista è data ampia libertà, in molti passaggi il compositore lascia infatti carta bianca per l’introduzione di abbellimenti, arpeggi ed espressioni del più vario virtuosismo. Diversi critici ravvisano in questi due movimenti, Allegro e Rondò, una qual certa nostalgia per determinati stilemi che erano stati caratteristici della scrittura del primo Mozart, che il compositore sembra qui riprendere in una forma ora rinnovata. All’Andante viene affidato il momento di maggior tensione lirica. La forma è quella del tema con variazioni, la tonalità del tema è do minore, seguono quindi cinque variazioni che si allontanano anche molto dal tema originario, ed hanno tra di loro caratteri marcatamente diversi, per poi giungere alla coda conclusiva. Data la forma insolita, ma anche il contenuto così vario e sperimentale, fu con grande sorpresa che Mozart accolse la richiesta del pubblico di replicare proprio l’Andante, durante la prima esecuzione, avvenuta il 23 dicembre 1785.

Armida was Haydn's most successful opera. At the service of the Esterházy court, the composer dedicated himself to it in 1783 and the opera was staged for the first time in Eisenstadt on 26 February 1784. Prince Nicolaus was particularly enraptured, so much so that it required an impressive number of revivals, as well fifty, in the following years. The subject is taken from Jerusalem Delivered, the plot evolves around the emotional torments of the protagonist, the Muslim sorceress Armida, and of Rinaldo, hero of the Christian army, which had already inspired the homonymous works by Monteverdi, Lully, Vivaldi, Händel, Gluck, Salieri and others. Haydn was one of the composers who had the greatest influence on the development of the symphony genre, his aptitude for orchestral writing is evident even in the operatic context. The orchestra has in fact significant importance in the moments of accompaniment that follow each other between arias and recitatives, to emerge definitively in the pieces entirely dedicated to it, ie the overture and the initial scene of the third act. With this overture, the composer combines his now more than solid symphonism with a distinctly dramatic vein,Armida has often been described as a 'reformed' opera, referring to Gluck's reform of opera. According to Gluck, it was essential that the overture be wholly relevant to the action, that is, that the musical content be used exclusively to anticipate the themes and affects which would then define the dramaturgical content. Haydn actually follows this principle, writing an overture which can also be performed autonomously, but which finds its main dimension as part of a dramatic unit of great impact.

The Concerto for piano and orchestra K. 466 was composed by Mozart in 1785. The composer had by now completely established himself also in Vienna, so he could finally devote himself to much more experimental and personal research in all musical fields. The genre of the concert for piano and orchestra had been particularly congenial to the introduction of the composer to the Viennese public, it was in fact he himself who performed at the piano showing both his compositional talent and his charisma as an interpreter. Concert No. 20 played a singularly important role in the development of this genre, expressing great innovations both in piano writing and, in particular, in the relationship between piano and orchestra. Here the incipit in D minor of the Allegro already takes the listener by surprise, accustomed to openings in major keys, to outline a character of great intensity and tragedy. It is clear, right from the first movement, how much the dimension of the ensemble and the soloist enter into dialogue, sometimes even in contrast, as never before, determining an almost dramaturgical level. This trait will be of particular inspiration for Beethoven and for romantic composers, who will often frequent the genre of the concert for piano and orchestra, which gradually became more and more popular during the nineteenth century. It will be Beethoven himself, a great admirer of the Concerto n. 20, to write a final cadence for the Allegro, which has now become canonical. The second movement, a romance, is very different from the first in its thematic simplicity, the theme is presented here by the piano, and then taken up by the whole; the 'question and response' between piano and orchestra remains central, in this case through a linear melody with a strong expressive charge. The Rondò takes up the bloodier character of the Allegro, with a pressing rhythm and greater tension, which flows into the Allegro assai section in D major, a tonality with which Mozart shows off a further and surprising final contrast. Concert No. 22, K. 482 was composed in the same year, a few months after n. 20. In this case, it is not the dramatic intensity that prevails; both the first and the third movement, rich in thematic inventiveness and the continuous contrast between Tutti and Solo, have a more sunny vivacity. The pianist is given ample freedom, in many passages the composer leaves carte blanche for the introduction of embellishments, arpeggios and expressions of the most varied virtuosity. Several critics recognize in these two movements, Allegro and Rondò, a certain nostalgia for certain stylistic features that had been characteristic of the early Mozart's writing, which the composer seems to be resuming here in a now renewed form. The moment of greatest lyrical tension is entrusted to the Andante. The form is that of the theme with variations, the tonality of the theme is C minor, then five variations follow which are very far from the original theme, and have markedly different characters from each other, to then reach the final coda. Given the unusual form, but also the varied and experimental content, it was with great surprise that Mozart accepted the public's request to repeat the Andante during the first performance, which took place on 23 December 1785.
