Nach der mitreissenden Aufführung von Beethovens Neunter Symphonie kehrt La Cetra mit einem weiteren Monumentalwerk der klassischen Musikliteratur ins Stadtcasino Ba- sel zurück: Mozarts «Requiem». Monumental weniger in seinen Ausmassen als in seinen Ansprüchen: legendenumranktes Fragment, allbekannt und doch voller Fragen, Erwartungen an technische Präzision und aufrichtige Emotionalität, Spiritualität im geistlichen wie im konzertanten Rahmen.
Bereits in der Vorbereitung fallen wichtige Entscheide: so wählten wir die von Robert Levin erstellte Fassung, wo die unvollständig gebliebenen Sätze und die Instrumentierung in einer Weise ergänzt sind, die dem Geist Mozarts angemessen scheinen. Die Besetzung ist bei uns relativ klein, was Transparenz des Klangs und die Hörbarmachung von artikulatorischen Details ermöglicht. Die Solistinnen und Solisten haben auch in diesem Konzert eine enge Bindung zu Basel und seinem reichen Musikleben: die lettische Sopranistin Gunta Smirnova und der Schweizer Tenor
Jakob Pilgram haben in Basel studiert, Rachele Raggiotti sang mit uns am Theater Basel in Vivaldis «Gloria», und der spanische Bassbariton José Antonio López ist mit einem Repertoire von Händel bis Beethoven ein gern gesehener Gast von La Cetra.
Dem Requiem vorangestellt wird Haydns Symphonie Nr. 44, die den Beinamen «Trauersymphonie» erhielt und formal wie musikalisch zu den interessantesten Werken dieses Komponisten gehört.

After the stirring performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, La Cetra returns to the Stadtcasino Ba- sel with another monumental work of classical music literature: Mozart’s “Requiem”. Monumental not so much in its dimensions as in its demands: a fragment shrouded in legend, universally known and yet full of questions, expectations of technical precision and sincere emotionality, spirituality in both sacred and concert settings.
Important decisions are already made in the preparation: we chose the version prepared by Robert Levin, where the incomplete movements and the instrumentation are completed in a way that seems appropriate to Mozart’s spirit. The instrumentation is relatively small, which allows for transparency of sound and the audibility of articulatory details. The soloists in this concert also have close ties to Basel and its rich musical life: the Latvian soprano Gunta Smirnova and the Swiss tenor
Jakob Pilgram studied in Basel, Rachele Raggiotti sang with us at the Basel Theatre in Vivaldi’s “Gloria”, and the Spanish bass-baritone José Antonio López is a welcome guest of La Cetra with a repertoire ranging from Handel to Beethoven.
The Requiem will be preceded by Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, which has been nicknamed the “Mourning Symphony” and is formally and musically one of the most interesting works by this composer.
