Passion mysteries were born in 12th-century Europe on the basis of liturgical drama. Members of mendicant orders contributed to the production of the spectacles about the passion and death of Jesus; Initially, the stagings featured mainly monks and students of convent schools. With time, the organization of performances was taken over by city guild brotherhoods, and special foundations were also established to finance performance teams. In Poland, spectacles of this type have been known since the 14th century, although they were not called "mystery" at that time.


Initially, the passions were simply part of the liturgy of Holy Week, during which descriptions of the Passion of Christ from the Gospels were recited and sung. In the Middle Ages, these were simple chorale arrangements, in the Renaissance - polyphonic, polyphonic pieces. In the Baroque period, apart from emotionally saturated vocal voices, musical instruments appeared more and more often. Particularly popular were plankts, included in the liturgy of Good Friday and used in mysteries, combining mourning for the dead with encouragement to participate in suffering after their loss. From the 16th century, they were intertwined with the Passion performance or performed right after it. Plankty (from Latin planctus - complaining, crying) originated from the characteristic medieval lamentation literature, expressing grief for a loved one and calling for joint mourning. Invocations (Latin: apostropha de luctu) were most often addressed to God or angels and constituted the main motif, repeated many times.


Lenten songs described the Passion of Jesus, but also expressed sorrow for human sins. They were performed during the vigil at the Lord's Tomb and at the end of the so-called procession of flagellants (whippers). If they were part of Passion plays, they served as intermedia, separating the individual parts of the spectacle. Today, it is difficult to state unequivocally whether they made their way into folk music from there, or vice versa, but the repertoire preserved to this day includes both artistic vocal and instrumental pieces as well as simple stanza songs with a simple melody.


The appearance of the latter allowed for the active participation of a larger number of believers in the rites, and this meant that in the eighteenth century theatrical performances began to be supplanted by the increasingly common services of Bitter Lamentations. Currently, the mysteries of the Lord's Passion, revived in the 20th century, are staged in several Polish towns, and the native Passion works, preserved, among others, in in the cantionals of Jan Seklucjan and Walenty from Brzozów, we can also admire them during chamber vocal-instrumental concerts, which are part of the beautiful musical tradition of the Holy Week period.

Misteria pasyjne narodziły się w XII-wiecznej Europie na gruncie dramatu liturgicznego. Do powstania widowisk o męce i śmierci Jezusa przyczynili się członkowie zakonów żebraczych; początkowo w inscenizacjach występowali przede wszystkim zakonnicy i uczniowie szkół klasztornych. Z czasem organizację spektakli przejęły miejskie bractwa cechowe, powstawały także specjalne fundacje, które finansowały zespoły wykonawcze. W Polsce widowiska tego typu znane były od XIV wieku, choć nie określano ich wtedy jeszcze nazwą „misterium”.


Początkowo pasje stanowiły po prostu część liturgii Wielkiego Tygodnia, podczas której recytowano i śpiewano pochodzące z Ewangelii opisy Męki Pańskiej. W średniowieczu były to proste opracowania chorałowe, w renesansie – wielogłosowe, polifoniczne utwory. W okresie baroku obok nasyconych emocjonalnie głosów wokalnych coraz częściej pojawiały się w nich instrumenty muzyczne. Szczególnym powodzeniem cieszyły się wchodzące w skład liturgii Wielkiego Piątku i wykorzystywane w misteriach plankty, łączące opłakiwanie zmarłych z zachętą do współuczestnictwa w cierpieniu po ich stracie. Od XVI wieku wplatano je w przebieg przedstawienia pasyjnego lub wykonywano tuż po nim. Plankty (z łac. planctus – narzekanie, płacz) wzięły swój początek z charakterystycznej średniowiecznej literatury lamentacyjnej, wyrażającej żal po bliskiej osobie i wzywającej do wspólnego jej opłakiwania. Nawoływania (łac. apostropha de luctu) najczęściej kierowane były do Boga lub aniołów i stanowiły główny, powtarzający się wielokrotnie motyw.


Wiekopostne pieśni opisywały mękę Jezusa, ale także wyrażały żal za ludzkie grzechy. Wykonywano je podczas czuwania przy Grobie Pańskim oraz na zakończenie tzw. procesji flagelantów (biczowników). Jeśli wchodziły w skład misteriów pasyjnych, pełniły role intermediów, oddzielających poszczególne części widowiska. Trudno dziś jednoznacznie stwierdzić, czy stamtąd przedostały się do muzyki ludowej, czy było odwrotnie, ale zachowany do dziś repertuar obejmuje zarówno artystyczne utwory wokalno-instrumentalne, jak i proste pieśni zwrotkowe o mało skomplikowanej melodyce.


Pojawienie się tych ostatnich pozwoliło na czynny udział w obrzędach większej liczby wiernych, a to sprawiło, że w XVIII stuleciu widowiska teatralne zaczęły być wypierane przez coraz powszechniejsze nabożeństwa Gorzkich żali. Obecnie odrodzone w XX wieku misteria Męki Pańskiej są wystawiane w kilkunastu polskich miejscowościach, a rodzimą twórczość pasyjną, zachowaną m.in. w kancjonałach Jana Seklucjana oraz Walentego z Brzozowa, możemy podziwiać także podczas kameralnych koncertów wokalno-instrumentalnych, wpisujących się w piękną tradycję muzyczną okresu Wielkiego Tygodnia.
