After the moderate success of OBERT and the flop of KINGDOM, Verdi was close to abandoning his career as an opera composer. Everything changed in 1841, when the manager of La Scala gave him a libretto about the adventures of King Nebuchadnezzar and the beginnings of the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. In less than a year, NABUCCO saw almost eighty performances and secured itself a permanent place in the repertoire of the world's greatest stages.
This majestic piece takes us back to the time when the Jewish people were ruled by the Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar. The longing of the Israelites for the lost freedom is intertwined here with court intrigues, the lust for power and the love dilemmas of the king's daughters. Although the action takes place in the 6th century BC, it actually refers to the freedom movements that aimed at the unification of Italy under the reign of Victor Emmanuel II. During its premiere, the content of the work, equated by Italians with their own fate, today - now deprived of the political context - makes an equally unforgettable impression among viewers.
