The Babylonian king Nabucco succeeds in winning the battle against the Israelites and in enslaving the Hebrew people. Among them, however, is one he loves: his daughter Fenena, who in turn has a close relationship with the Jewish prince Ismaele. She is not alone in her love for this man: her sister Abigaille also desires him and is almost mad with jealousy.

When she then learns that she is not really the daughter of a king and future heir to the throne, but the illegitimate child and daughter of a slave, her thirst for revenge grows immeasurably.

King Nabucco is consumed by power and in his delusions of grandeur proclaims himself a god. Abigaille knows how to take advantage of her father's mental state: hoping to win back royal power, she forces him to have all the Hebrews executed.
So also that of his daughter Fenena, who has converted in her relationship with Ismaele and would be the rightful heir to the throne.

With Nabucco and thus a story that originally comes from the Old Testament, Verdi achieved his breakthrough as an opera composer and also the starting signal for “his galley years”:

“You can say I haven't had an hour
's rest since Nabucco. Sixteen galley years!'

so Verdi in 1858 in a letter to his girlfriend Clarina Maffei.

Dem babylonischen König Nabucco gelingt es, den Kampf gegen die Israeliten für sich zu entscheiden und das Volk der Hebräer zu knechten. Darunter ist jedoch eine, die er liebt: seine Tochter Fenena, die wiederum eine innige Beziehung zu dem jüdischen Prinzen Ismaele pflegt. Sie ist nicht allein mit ihrer Liebe zu diesem Mann: Auch ihre Schwester Abigaille begehrt ihn und ist schier rasend vor Eifersucht.

Als sie dann noch erfährt, eigentlich nicht Königstochter und zukünftige Thronfolgerin zu sein, sondern uneheliches Kind und Tochter einer Sklavin, wächst ihre Rachsucht ins Unermessliche.

König Nabucco wird von der Macht verschlungen und ernennt sich selbst in seinem Größenwahn zum Gott. Den irren Geisteszustand des Vaters weiß Abigaille für sich zu nutzen: In der Hoffnung, die königliche Macht zurückzugewinnen, zwingt sie ihn, die Hinrichtung aller Hebräer zu veranlassen.
Damit auch die seiner Tochter Fenena, die in ihrer Beziehung zu Ismaele konvertiert ist und rechtmäßige Thronfolgerin wäre.

Mit Nabucco und damit einer Geschichte, die ursprünglich dem Alten Testament entstammt, gelang Verdi sein Durchbruch als Opernkomponist und auch der Startschuss „seiner Galeerenjahre“:

»Seit Nabucco habe ich, kann man sagen, nicht eine Stunde
Ruhe gehabt. Sechzehn Galeerenjahre!«

so Verdi 1858 in einem Brief an seine Freundin Clarina Maffei.
