Nabucco
The four-act lyrical-dramatic opera Nabucco was composed by Giuseppe Verdi as his third opera, in 1841, based on the Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera based on the play Nabucodonosor by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue from 1836 and the scenario of the ballet of the same name by Antonio Cortesi from 1838. The opera was performed for the first time under the title Nebuchadnezzar in Milan's Scala, and its enormous success permanently established Verdi's reputation as a great opera composer. The theme of the opera is the difficult history of the Jewish people, which is the Babylonian conqueror Nebuchadnezzar II. attacked and defeated, exiled from their homeland, although the historical events are used only as a backdrop to the romantic and political plot. As a great patriot, Verdi was especially inspired by the scene in which the captive Jews on the banks of the Euphrates yearn for a distant homeland, so in one night he wrote a widely known choral aria that became the dramaturgical and musical backbone of the work; Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate / Take flight, think, on wings of gold. Shortly after the premiere of the work, this refrain was sung on the streets of Italy as a revolutionary anthem, and to this day it is regularly performed as an encore in many opera houses around the world. NABUCCO
Četveročinsku lirsko-dramsku operu Nabucco skladao je Giuseppe Verdi kao treću svoju operu, 1841. na talijanski libreto Temistoclea Solere prema drami Nabucodonosor Augustea Anicet-Bourgeoisa i Francisa Cornuea iz 1836. godine te scenariju istoimena baleta Antonija Cortesija iz 1838. Opera je prvi put izvedena pod naslovom Nabucodonosor u milanskoj Scali, a njezin golem uspjeh trajno je uspostavio Verdijevu reputaciju velikoga opernog skladatelja. Tema opere je teška povijest židovskoga naroda, koji je babilonski kralj osvajač Nabukodonosor II. napao te porazivši, prognao iz njihove domovine, iako se povijesni događaji koriste samo kao pozadina romantičnoga i političkoga zapleta. Taj je refren ubrzo poslije praizvedbe djela izašao na talijanske ulice pjevan kao revolucionarna himna, a do danas se s njime redovito izlazi na bis u mnogim opernim kućama diljem svijeta. Skoro četrdeset godina poslije posljednjega premijernog izvođenja Nabucca, novim uprizorenjem na sceni zagrebačke Opere, ravnat će Pier Giorgio Morandi, dok će predstavu režirati Giancarlo del Monaco.
