At the beginning of the New Year, Carl Orffs Carmina Burana tells of the return to spring, the pleasures of life and the caprice of Fortuna, the goddess of luck. The work is based on excerpts from a medieval collection of texts of the same name, which was found in 1803 in the Benediktbeuern monastery in Bavaria. Carmina Burana contrasts medieval stylistic features with a huge orchestra and helped Orff to become well known. After the successful premiere of the work in 1937, Orff wrote to his publisher: “Everything that I have written so far and that you have unfortunately printed can now be crushed! My collected works begin with Carmina Burana! " The choir, soloists of the Basel Theater and the Basel Symphony Orchestra perform under the direction of the American Jonathan Stockhammer,
