ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK        Cello Concerto in B minor, op. 104

Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) set out to compose the Cello Concerto in New York, completing it in Bohemia in 1895. Enthusiastic about the work, Brahms said, “Had I known that one could write a cello concerto like this, I would have written one long ago!” In tribute to his dying first love (his sister-in-law), Dvořák included in the third movement a quotation of her favourite song of his, “Leave Me Alone”.

Dvořák composed the “New World Symphony” in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America. From the outset, he sought to give the work an American feel, with references to Black and Native American musical traditions (such as pentatonic scales and melodies), melding it with contrasting music from his native land.

Carlo Montanaro több éve visszatérő vendégnek számít a Nemzeti Filharmonikusoknál. Zubin Mehta felfedezettjének karrierje 2001-ben indult, ekkor vezényelte a firenzei Maggio Musicale zenekarát is, később keresett operakarmester lett, aki a szimfonikus – és ezen belül a romantikus – repertoár elhivatott előadójává is vált. Ezúttal a 19. század egyik legnagyobb cseh zeneszerzőjének két emblematikus alkotását vezényli. A megunhatatlan Újvilág-szimfónia mellett a lendületes, áradó dallamaival magával ragadó Gordonkaversenyt a hazai közönség előtt szintén nem ismeretlen Nicolas Altstaedt szólójával élvezhetjük. A német-francia muzsikus nemzedékének egyik kiemelkedő tagja, aki 2010-ben a Lucerni Fesztiválon a Bécsi Filharmonikusok kíséretével, Gustavo Dudamel vezényletével adott koncerttel vett villámrajtot a nemzetközi zenei életben. Azóta olyan neves karmesterekkel dolgozott együtt, mint Roger Norrington, Neville Marriner és Vladimir Ashkenazy; 2012-ben Gidon Kremer őt nevezte ki utódjául a Lockenhaus Festival élén, majd néhány év múlva Fischer Ádám adta át neki a stafétabotot az Osztrák–Magyar Haydn Zenekar művészeti vezetői posztján.
