The term »art song« is misleading at first glance: despite the high artistic and technical standards, its origins lie in folk songs and the natural. The focus is on returning to the essentials, as well as the question of the nothingness and transience of one's own actions - vanitas. The baritone Georg Nigl and the pianist Olga Pashchenko interpret selected songs by Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven's "An die ferne Geliebte" in an intimate setting and break down the individual feelings into more delicate components. They contrast this with the song cycle »Vermischter Traum« composed especially for Nigl by the contemporary composer Wolfgang Rihm. In his first work after a serious illness, Rihm examines the same basic questions of human existence that the art song has been asking itself for three centuries: the question of love, death and loneliness.
