Born of a concept the young Beethoven had pondered as early as 1793—setting Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” poem to music—and completed at last in 1824, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor is the composer’s final finished symphony. Widely regarded as one of his greatest works, it is the first example of a choral symphony written by a major composer. The Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra—together with the Bienen Contemporary/Early Vocal Ensemble, University Chorale, and Northwestern Alumni Choir in its performance debut—present two special performances of this enduring, beloved, and influential work. Also featured on the program are the overture to Carl Maria von Weber’s “grand, heroic, romantic” opera Euryanthe and Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Symphony No. 2.
