Ópera do Castelo presents the chamber opera O Homem dos Sonhos at São Luiz,  with music and libretto by the composer António Chagas Rosa, one of the most important Portuguese composers of our time. A project “dreamed of” for a long time, inspired by the dramatic and visionary material of the work of Mário de Sá-Carneiro, based on his homonymous short story.

This opera, in seven scenes, reflects on the human condition, on the tenuous thread between madness and sanity, between dream and reality, summarizing the eternal human dissatisfaction and its continuous obsession with transcending limits of time, space and gender. And also about the premonitory and structuring fascination of the dream itself, since it is after all that shapes and guides the human being in his existential march, as a global society and as an individual. Everything that we are has perhaps already been dreamed of and transformed into visible matter.

A mysterious and elegant man (incarnated by the soprano Catarina Molder, the poet's alter-ego) managed to achieve supreme happiness, by transcending the barrier of dreams, overcoming the boring routine of life, and living everything he dreamed of: he traveled in a dream to countries of new and indescribable colors, to cities where the gas that was breathed was composed of music, to countries where there were more than two sexes, where the soul was visible and the body just not…
