One of the original myths of classical literature in an unusual combination: an evening about the highs and lows of human action and feeling.

The marriage of the widowed Queen Jocasta to Oedipus, the savior of the city of Thebes from the Sphinx, is celebrated. Thebes is threatened by the plague. The oracle proclaims that the plague is the punishment for the murderer of King Laios still living in the city unmolested. Oedipus wants to find the murderer, but the investigations reveal that he is not only the son of Laios, but also his murderer, and that he also married his own mother, Jocasta. Both of them can't bear the guilt. Jocasta hangs himself and Oedipus gouges out his own eyes.

In the 1920s, Igor Stravinsky repeatedly dealt with mythical themes such as B. the ›spring sacrifice‹. The dance cantata 'Les Noces' (The Wedding) and 'Oedipus Rex', an adaptation of the tragedy of Sophocles by the French playwright Jean Cocteau, soon followed. Director Timofey Kulyabin's team, which worked on the acclaimed ›Rigoletto‹ in the 2016/17 season, is returning to Wuppertal for the double evening.

Einer der Ur-Mythen der klassischen Literatur in ungewöhnlicher Kombination: Ein Abend über die Höhen und Abgründe menschlichen Handelns und Empfindens.

Es wird die Hochzeit der verwitweten Königin Jokaste mit Oedipus, dem Erretter der Stadt Theben vor der Sphinx, gefeiert. Theben ist von der Pest bedroht. Das Orakel verkündet, dass die Seuche die Strafe dafür sei, dass der Mörder des Königs Laios noch unbehelligt in der Stadt lebe. Oedipus will den Mörder finden, doch die Nachforschungen ergeben, dass er selber nicht nur der Sohn des Laios ist, sondern auch dessen Mörder, und zudem mit Jokaste seine eigene Mutter geheiratet hat. Beide ertragen die Schuld nicht. Jokaste erhängt sich und Oedipus sticht sich selber die Augen aus.

In den 20er-Jahren beschäftigte sich Igor Strawinsky immer wieder mit mythischen Themen wie z. B. dem ›Frühlingsopfer‹. Bald darauf folgten die Tanzkantate ›Les Noces‹ (Die Hochzeit) und ›Oedipus Rex‹, eine Bearbeitung der Tragödie des Sophokles durch den französischen Dramatiker Jean Cocteau. Für den Doppelabend kehrt das Team um Regisseur Timofey Kulyabin, das in der Spielzeit 2016/17 den umjubelten ›Rigoletto‹ erarbeitet hat, nach Wuppertal zurück.
