In this concert, the homage to Igor Stravinsky that runs through the entire Festival takes the form of a journey along the composer's variegated chamber path. The pieces in the program go through different stylistic phases starting from the 1910s and reaching the threshold of the so-called serial phase of the 1950s. The four joke songs contained in Pribautki were born in the wake of a trip to Russia, during which Stravinsky had collected some popular poems, later translated into French by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. Shortly afterwards, the Three Pieces for solo clarinet , composed as a sign of gratitude to Werner Reinhart, a patron and amateur clarinetist who had supported the costs of the first staging of the Histoire du soldat. With Tango and Elegia we move into a new creative phase, the one linked to his stay in the United States. Here the composer had gone to give lectures at Harvard University, only to settle down following the looming war events. Tango is the first composition created after the move and is characterized by a writing that is only apparently simple, which makes the rhythmic regularity of the dance its own, enriching it with personal stylistic elements. Composed in memory of Alphonse Onnou, member and founder of the Pro Arte Quartet of Brussels, of the Elegiafor solo viola a version for violin was also made. The writing investigates the possibilities of the instrument in a polyphonic perspective that makes the experience of Bach's counterpoint its own. In Septet the writing seems to go in new directions, presenting elements that can be traced back to serial practice. The closeness to Shönberg is confirmed by the direct reference to the Suite op. 26, composed by the Austrian composer in 1926, with which several points of contact emerge.
Virginia Guastella's work presented for the first time calls into question the relationship with popular culture, so central to the production of the Russian composer. This is based on excerpts from Orlando furiosoby Ariosto and from other texts used in the Sicilian Puppet Theater. Collecting the suggestions triggered by the pieces in the program, Cristian Taraborrelli has developed a direction born in the form of a seminar together with the circus artists of the Materiaviva Academy in Rome.

 

* Angelica cunta - world premiere

Inserted in the Stravinskian setting foreseen by the evening's programme, Angelica cunta is my homage to the Sicilian Puppet Theater and to my hometown Palermo. In my story it is Angelica who is the narrator, who uses her own voice by borrowing, at the beginning and at the end of the monodrama, the words that Ariosto entrusts to himself in Orlando furioso . Angelica tells in the first person some episodes of the immense reference literary repertoire using various declamatory techniques typical of the "cuntu". She imitates the voices of the male protagonists, sings as a lyrical mezzo-soprano and speaks directly to the audience. She loses Medoro, identifying herself with Orpheusdi Gluck, impersonates the evil sorceress Alcina, turns to Charlemagne to receive as a gift the knight who will be able to beat his brother in single combat.
Angelica «as does the sonator above her witty instrument, she often changes string and varies sound».
In my pages I also wanted to remember Sylvano Bussotti, who passed away a few weeks ago, by inserting a graphic sign he adopted in some of his works.

The wind glides over Angelica's candid skin in Medoro's suffocating grip.
Her body is video, sex is powerful force, heart is shattered by pains of love.
All the paladins run towards you, woman who flees, flees, you walk lines that chase each other, you make your flesh tremble, hot iron banging against iron, strong bodies that crush your body. Mitigate the flow of your blood with the blood of the earth.
Taste my mouth. Your hand is trembling and the images of my reflection become trembling, a digital reflection of a story that feeds on your words that you whisper to me from behind; inside my head you enter me.
Don't dream of bodies that escape you, don't desire other people's passions, don't touch the hot iron that pierced my heart. Faces that animate space, wounds that create new pains and passions, you black soul that inflicts unheard-of pains on me, I penetrate you and I feel you dying, and you die inside me.
Faces of women breaking on glass wet from your sweat, you hot sex that threatens to die.
It's Angelica's cries that move the forest, it's Angelica's hands that fold loves, it's Angelica's tears that fill streams of fertility.
Don't satiate your mad war with my soul, don't chase after ghosts that smell of desire, don't wield weapons of heart against me, I fear and love you.

In questo concerto, l’omaggio a Igor Stravinsky che attraversa l’intero Festival prende la forma di un percorso nel variegato sentiero cameristico del compositore. I brani in programma attraversano diverse fasi stilistiche a partire dagli anni Dieci e arrivando alla soglia della cosiddetta fase seriale degli anni Cinquanta. Le quattro canzoni scherzose contenute in Pribautki nascono sulla scia di un viaggio in Russia, durante il quale Stravinsky aveva raccolto delle poesie popolari, successivamente tradotte in francese da Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. Di poco successivi i Tre pezzi per clarinetto solo, composti in segno di riconoscenza per Werner Reinhart, mecenate e clarinettista dilettante che aveva sostenuto i costi del primo allestimento dell’Histoire du soldat. Con Tango ed Elegia ci spostiamo in una nuova fase creativa, quella legata alla sua permanenza negli Stati Uniti. Qui il compositore si era recato per tenere delle lezioni all’Università di Harvard, salvo stabilirsi a seguito dell’incombere degli eventi bellici. Tango è la prima composizione realizzata dopo il trasferimento ed è caratterizzata da una scrittura solo apparentemente semplice, che fa propria la regolarità ritmica della danza arricchendola di elementi stilistici personali. Composta in memoria di Alphonse Onnou, membro e fondatore del Quartetto Pro Arte di Bruxelles, dell’Elegia per viola sola fu realizzata anche una versione per violino. La scrittura indaga le possibilità dello strumento in una prospettiva polifonica che fa propria l’esperienza del contrappunto bachiano. In Septet la scrittura sembra andare verso nuove direzioni, presentando elementi riconducibili alla pratica seriale. La vicinanza a Shönberg è confermata dal riferimento diretto alla Suite op. 26, composta dal compositore austriaco nel 1926, con la quale emergono diversi punti di contatto.
Il lavoro di Virginia Guastella presentato in prima assoluta chiama in causa il rapporto con la cultura popolare, così centrale nella produzione del compositore russo. Questo si basa su estratti dell’Orlando furioso di Ariosto e da altri testi utilizzati nell’Opera dei pupi siciliana. Raccogliendo le suggestioni innescate dai brani in programma, Cristian Taraborrelli ha elaborato una regia nata in forma seminariale insieme agli artisti circensi dell’Accademia Materiaviva di Roma.

 

*Angelica cunta - prima esecuzione assoluta

Inserito nella cornice stravinskiana prevista dal programma della serata, Angelica cunta è un mio omaggio al Teatro dei Pupi siciliano e alla mia città natale Palermo. Nella mia storia è Angelica a essere narratrice, a usare la sua propria voce prendendo in prestito, all'inizio e alla fine del monodramma, le parole che Ariosto affida a se stesso nell’Orlando furioso. Angelica racconta in prima persona alcuni episodi dello sterminato repertorio letterario di riferimento avvalendosi di diverse tecniche declamatorie tipiche del “cuntu”. Imita le voci dei protagonisti maschili, canta come mezzosoprano lirico e parla rivolgendosi direttamente al pubblico. Perde Medoro, immedesimandosi nell’Orfeo di Gluck, impersona la cattiva maga Alcina, si rivolge a Carlo Magno per ricevere in dono il cavaliere che riuscirà a battere a singolar tenzone il fratello.
Angelica «come fa il sonator sopra il suo instrumento arguto, spesso muta corda e varia suono».
Nelle mie pagine ho anche voluto ricordare Sylvano Bussotti, scomparso da poche settimane, inserendo un segno grafico da lui adottato in alcune sue opere.

Un respiro che fugge.
Un respiro che fugge e si accorda al respiro della foresta. Corse che tracciano la storia, passioni che fanno vibrare le pelli di uomini e donne.
Labbra che sussurrano desideri.
Il vento scivola sulla pelle candida di Angelica stretta dalla morsa soffocante di Medoro.
Il corpo è video, il sesso è forza possente, il cuore è sconquassato da pene d’amore.
Tutti i paladini corrono verso di te, donna che fuggi, rifuggi, percorri linee che si rincorrono, fai tremare le carni, ferro caldo che sbatte contro ferro, corpi forti che schiacciano il tuo di corpo. Mitiga lo scorrere del tuo sangue con il sangue della terra.
Assapora la mia bocca. La tua mano è tremolante e tremolanti diventano le immagini del mio riflesso, riflesso digitale di una storia che si alimenta con le tue parole che mi sussurri da dietro; dentro la mia testa mi entri.
Non sognare corpi che ti sfuggono, non desiderare passioni di altri, non toccare il ferro caldo che ha trafitto il mio cuore. Volti che animano lo spazio, ferite che sono creatrici di nuovi dolori e passioni, tu nera anima che mi infliggi pene inaudite, ti penetro e ti sento morire, e muori dentro di me.
Volti di donne che si infrangono su vetri bagnati dal tuo sudore, tu caldo sesso che minacci di morire.
Sono le grida di Angelica che smuovono la foresta, sono le mani di Angelica che piegano gli amori, sono le lacrime di Angelica che riempiono ruscelli di fertilità.
Non saziare la tua folle guerra con la mia anima, non rincorrere fantasmi che profumano di desiderio, non maneggiare armi di cuore contro di me, io temo e t’amo.
