"One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" as a dramatic symphony
The world premiere was in 2009 at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. Since then, the opera has not been staged again, so this is only her second “outing” to the public. But the second exit can be even more difficult than the first. Especially when you consider that almost ten years have passed since the first one, that it was recognized as extremely successful, and we are talking about such a rare phenomenon on the musical stage as an opera based on the work of Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

And the fact that the director in both cases is the same - Georgy Isahakyan - does not make things easier. First, he needs to repeat, without repeating, his success. And secondly, it will not work again: the dimensions do not allow, the Perm stage, of course, significantly exceeds the Chamber Stage named after. Pokrovsky.

The circumstances offered by the stage deprive the viewer of a “protective” distance: in this production, close-ups prevail, all the details are in sight, the cinematography originally laid down in the opera acquires the most complete stage embodiment (this time Georgy Isahakyan worked in tandem with the artist Alexei Votyakov). Existence on a close-up, a stone's throw from a "live" viewer requires artists to play to the limit. It is absolutely impossible to fake here - it means not only and not so much the vocals, but the sincerity of the experienced emotion. The camp theme is special, it excites the genetic memory. “I am convinced that the only way to draw conclusions from the past is to experience it through art,” is how the director thinks. The epic Perm production was "fueled" by the city itself, which gave it life, a place the genius of which is ripening, including "Perm-36" - a memorial "camp" open-air museum. Well, in Moscow - in Moscow, it remains to be seen what meanings the performance will gain, shown in the immediate vicinity of the infamous Lubyanka.

Our director-producer in this whole story is a special character. It was he, the then head of the Perm Theatre, who was inspired by the genius of the place to initiate the writing of an opera based on this story. He turned to several composers - they all refused: the theme was frightening. But once in St. Petersburg I accidentally ran into Alexander Tchaikovsky on the street - and received not just consent, but the ardent support of a like-minded person. The composer later said that there was something mystical in this meeting, the hand of fate was felt. As a student at the conservatory, he read Solzhenitsy, and not only the “legal” One Day, which was out of print, but also those things that were obtained in samizdat performance and read avidly overnight. And already in those days he wanted to translate this documentary truthful art of prose into the language of musical theater.

But the youthful enthusiasm for Solzhenitsyn was reflected in the process of working on the commissioned opera. There is not a single word in the script that does not come from the story. And its text, "99.9 percent completely unchanged," fit well with the music. Alexander Tchaikovsky considers this prose to be musical, noting the poetry inherent in it and the peculiar musical rhythm. (What one of the first to note in his letter to Solzhenitsyn was Varlam Shalamov, another remarkable writer who suffered from the Stalinist camps: “The story is like poetry - everything is perfect in it, everything is expedient. Every line, every scene, every characterization is so laconic, smart, thin and deep).

Solzhenitsyn describes in One Day his own experience, collected “piece by piece” during eight years of imprisonment (the book was conceived in the winter of 1950/51 in the Ekibastuz special camp in Kazakhstan). He made the Russian peasant Ivan Shukhov the hero of the story (the real Shukhov, the prototype, was a carpenter and a soldier, he did not sit in the camp, he fought in an artillery battery under the command of Solzhenitsyn), and on his behalf, without too much pathos and heroism, he told about how it is important and you can not drop yourself and save a human face in inhuman conditions.

The script (that's why it's called that because it doesn't look like a libretto) reproduces the original as if it were going to be made into a movie. Fifteen episodes-pictures will go without interruption, replacing each other with almost cinematic clarity and rhythm. Of course, some cuts and rearrangements were made to build up the musical dramaturgy, but in general, the plot, as in the story, follows the camp daily routine “from wake up to lights out”: “Barrack. Early morning" - "Rail. Rise "-" Pass Yu-81 "-" In the commandant's office. Washing the floors "-" First-aid post" - "Shmon" ... "Barrack. Evening". “Almost a happy day,” Ivan Denisovich sums it up, “they didn’t put me in a punishment cell, I mowed down porridge at lunchtime, the brigadier closed the percentage, he laid the wall well, it was fun; I didn’t get caught on a raid, I worked part-time at Caesar’s in the evening, I bought tobacco. And I didn’t get sick, I got over it. ”

In the camp, he finds himself among different people, also innocently convicted in a trumped-up case (all the characters are borrowed by the writer from camp life, have real biographies). Among them are the former naval officer Kavtorang Buinovsky, the son of the “kulak” foreman Tyurin, the Baptist Alyosha, the half-educated director Tsezar Markovich, the paramedic Kolka, who did not graduate from the Literary Institute (out of twenty-eight characters, seventeen went to the opera).

From the stories of the heroes, their memories of their former lives and rare letters from home, the female images so necessary in the opera “appear”: Shukhov’s wife (she tells about life in the post-war village) and student girls who once hid Tyurin in the compartment of the Leningrad train. Female voices also perform male parts - the guard Tatarin and the informer DER - giving them an "unnatural" and therefore ominous coloring ("I wanted the listener to feel a little uncomfortable," the composer explains his technique). We see the camp authorities, and guards with machine guns, and columns of prisoners with sewn numbers, leaving for "general work" ...

Even the “Dictionary” of Prison Vocabulary (published by the appendix at the end of the story) has been “verbatim” set to music. In the opera, it sounds like a separate concert choral number, extremely ironic and inventive: "KVCh (Cultural and Educational Part)" is characterized by a vulgar waltz performed by a female choir, the definition "PPCh (Planning and Production Part. Camp Administration Department)" is accompanied by an eerie knock “fists on the floor”, and what is “condo” (punishment cell - ed.) is explained to the listeners in the rhythm of the bolero.

Some episodes are orchestral interludes from beginning to end. The orchestra “leads” the narration all the time, being quite an equal, and even the main “narrator” - it is not for nothing that the composer compares his opera with a dramatic symphony. But he strives for a “non-classical sound”, adding rare timbres of alto saxophone, accordion, domra, others - organ and harp - imitates on a synthesizer, enhances the percussion group with a variety of instruments. Echoes of the era can be heard in the “running” quotes from Soviet films (“Ivan the Terrible” by S. Prokofiev, “The Counter” by D. Shostakovich), but in general, the music is characterized by polyphonic presentation, focused on the style of Bach, and of course, the theme of “Passion”.

The moment of awareness and "living out" of one's historical past is very important, but no less important is the deeply personal beginning of the story, which at the same time gives it a universal scale. And it can appear truly metaphorical just on the opera stage. “Opera does not pretend to be life, it immediately steps on the cothurni, creates a certain distance. Music opens emotional floodgates and allows you to indirectly experience what you cannot let into yourself at the logical, detailed analytical level, ”- Georgy Isahakyan.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn did not see the first production - he died less than a year before it. But the director’s intentions and approach were appreciated and approved (which happened by no means always, including with the production of Ivan Denisovich on the dramatic stage): “In general, when discussing issues related to transitions, genre changes, I am always conservative and very unyielding. But your deeply thoughtful letter, full of lively spiritual movements, gave me a task for which I was not at all ready. Your arguments, relying on your directing experience and on the reputation of your theater, disarm me from objections that I would probably answer in another case ... May your idea be justified by creative success ”(from A. Solzhenitsyn’s letter to G. Isahakyan). The wish came true - the Perm performance, which received an absentee blessing from the author of the original source,

The future production interested another important character of the current premiere - the son of the writer Ignat Solzhenitsyn, a famous pianist and conductor, who agreed to become a member of the production team. (He already had to conduct this opera once, but in a concert performance, which took place four years ago as part of the A.D. Sakharov International Festival of Arts held in Nizhny Novgorod).

"This story must be read and memorized by every citizen out of all two hundred million citizens of the Soviet Union." Perhaps some citizens will go "from the opposite" - and fulfill the behest of Anna Akhmatova after visiting our performance?

Мировая премьера была в 2009 г. в Пермском театре оперы и балета. С тех пор опера больше не ставилась, так что это всего лишь ее второй «выход» на публику. А ведь второй выход может быть даже более сложным, чем первый. Особенно, если учесть, что с момента первого прошло почти десять лет, что был он признан в высшей степени удачным, а речь идет о таком редчайшем явлении на музыкальной сцене, как опера по произведению Александра Солженицына.

И то, что постановщик в обоих случаях один и тот же, – Георгий Исаакян, – не облегчает дело. Во-первых, ему нужно повторить, не повторяясь, свой успех. А во-вторых, повториться и не получится: размеры не позволяют, пермская сцена, разумеется, существенно превосходит Камерную сцену им. Покровского.

Предлагаемые сценой обстоятельства лишают зрителя «защищающего» расстояния: в этой постановке преобладают крупные планы, все детали на виду, изначально заложенная в опере кинематографичность обретает самое полное сценическое воплощение (на сей раз Георгий Исаакян работал в тандеме с художником Алексеем Вотяковым). Существование на крупном плане, в двух шагах от «живого» зрителя требует от артистов игры на пределе возможностей. Фальшивить здесь совсем нельзя – имеется в виду не только и не столько вокал, сколько искренность переживаемой эмоции. Лагерная тема – особая, будоражит генетическую память. «Я убежден, что единственный способ сделать выводы из прошлого — это пережить его через искусство», – так мыслит режиссер. Эпическая пермская постановка «подпитывалась» самим городом, давшим ей жизнь, местом, гений которого призревает в том числе и «Пермь-36» — мемориальный «лагерный» музей под открытым небом. Ну а в Москве – в Москве предстоит узнать, какими смыслами прирастет спектакль, показываемый в непосредственной близости от печально знаменитой «Лубянки».

Наш режиссер-постановщик во всей этой истории – особое действующее лицо. Именно ему, тогдашнему руководителю Пермского театра, и внушил гений места идею инициировать написание оперы по этой повести. Он обратился к нескольким композиторам – все отказались: пугала тема. Но однажды в Петербурге случайно столкнулся на улице с Александром Чайковским – и получил не просто согласие, а горячую поддержку единомышленника. Композитор потом рассказывал, что в этой встрече было что-то мистическое, чувствовалась рука судьбы. Будучи студеном консерватории, он зачитывался Солженицым, и не только вышедшим из печати «легальным» «Одним днем», но и теми вещами, что добывались в самиздатовском исполнении и взахлеб читались за ночь. И уже в те времена это документально правдивое искусство прозы ему хотелось перевести на язык музыкального театра. Но тогда это было немыслимо, в том числе и по молодости лет.

Зато юношеская увлеченность Солженицыным сказалась в процессе работы над заказанной оперой. В сценарии нет ни одного слова, которое пришло бы не из повести. А текст ее, «на 99,9 процентов совершенно не измененный», хорошо ложился на музыку. Александр Чайковский считает эту прозу музыкальной, отмечая заложенную в ней поэзию и своеобразный музыкальный ритм. (Что одним из первых отметил в своем письме Солженицыну еще один замечательный писатель, претерпевший от сталинских лагерей, Варлам Шаламов: «Повесть — как стихи — в ней все совершенно, все целесообразно. Каждая строка, каждая сцена, каждая характеристика настолько лаконична, умна, тонка и глубока»).

Солженицын описывает в «Одном дне» собственный опыт, собранный «по осколочкам» за восемь лет заключения (книга задумана зимой 1950/51 г. в Экибастузском особом лагере в Казахстане). Героем же повести он сделал русского крестьянина Ивана Шухова (реальный Шухов, прототип, был плотником и солдатом, в лагере не сидел, воевал в артиллерийской батарее под началом Солженицына), и от его лица, без лишнего пафоса и героизма, рассказал о том, как важно и можно не уронить себя и сберечь человеческое лицо в нечеловеческих условиях.

Сценарий (потому так и назван, что не похож на либретто) воспроизводит подлинник так, словно по нему будет сниматься фильм. Пятнадцать эпизодов-картин пойдут без перерыва, сменяя друг друга с почти кинематографической четкостью и ритмом. Конечно, для выстраивания музыкальной драматургии были предприняты некоторые сокращения и перестановки, но в целом сюжет, как и в повести, следует лагерному распорядку дня «от подъема до отбоя»: «Барак. Раннее утро» - «Рельс. Подъем» - «Проход Ю-81» - «В комендатуре. Мытье полов» - «Медпункт» - «Шмон» … «Барак. Вечер». «Почти счастливый день, — подводит ему итог Иван Денисович, — в карцер не посадили, в обед кашу закосил, бригадир процентовку закрыл, хорошо стену клал, весело; на шмоне не попался, подработал вечером у Цезаря, табачку купил. И не заболел, перемогся».

В лагере он оказывается среди разных людей, также невинно осужденных по сфабрикованному делу (все персонажи заимствованы писателем из лагерной жизни, имеют подлинные биографии). Среди них бывший морской офицер Кавторанг Буйновский, сын «кулака» бригадир Тюрин, баптист Алеша, недоучившийся режиссер Цезарь Маркович, фельдшер Колька, не окончивший Литературного института (из двадцати восьми персонажей в оперу перешли семнадцать).

Из рассказов героев, их воспоминаний о прежней жизни и редких писем из дома «проявляются» столь необходимые в опере женские образы: Жена Шухова (она рассказывает о жизни в послевоенной деревне) и девушки-студентки, когда-то прятавшие Тюрина в купе ленинградского поезда. Женские голоса исполняют и мужские партии — охранника Татарина и доносчика ДЭРа — придавая им «неестественную» и потому зловещую окраску («хотелось, чтобы слушателю стало немного не по себе», — так объясняет свой прием композитор). Мы видим и лагерное начальство, и охранников с автоматами, и колонны зэков с нашитыми номерами, уходящие на «общие работы»…

Даже «Словарь» тюремной лексики (опубликованный приложением в конце повести) «дословно» положен на музыку. В опере он звучит как отдельный концертный хоровой номер, на редкость ироничный и изобретательный: «КВЧ (Культурно-воспитательная часть)» охарактеризована пошленьким вальсом в исполнении женского хора, определение «ППЧ (Планово-производственная часть. Отдел лагерной администрации)» сопровождается жутковатым стуком «кулачками по полу», а что такое «кондей» (карцер – ред.) слушателям разъясняется в ритме болеро.

Некоторые эпизоды являются от начала до конца оркестровыми интерлюдиями. Оркестр все время «ведет» повествование, являясь вполне равноправным, а то и главным «рассказчиком» — не зря композитор сравнивает свою оперу с драматической симфонией. Но стремится к «неклассическому звучанию», добавляя редкие тембры альтового саксофона, аккордеона, домры, другие — орган и арфу — имитирует на синтезаторе, усиливает группу ударных разнообразными инструментами. Отзвуки эпохи доносятся в «пробегающих» цитатах из советских кинофильмов («Иван Грозный» С. Прокофьева, «Встречный» Д. Шостаковича), но в целом музыке свойственна полифоничность изложения, ориентированная на стиль Баха, и конечно, тему «Страстей».

Момент осознания и «изживания» своего исторического прошлого очень важен, но не менее важно глубоко личностное начало повести, которое в то же время придает ей общечеловеческий масштаб. И по-настоящему метафоричной она может предстать как раз на оперной сцене. «Опера не притворяется жизнью, она сразу же встает на котурны, создает некую дистанцию. Музыка открывает эмоциональные шлюзы и позволяет опосредованно пережить то, что на уровне логическом, детально аналитическом ты не можешь впустить в себя», – Георгий Исаакян.

Александр Солженицын не видел первой постановки – меньше чем за год до нее он скончался. Но намерения и подход режиссера оценил и одобрил (что случалось далеко не всегда, в том числе и с постановкой «Ивана Денисовича» — на драматической сцене): «Вообще при обсуждении вопросов, связанных с переходами, сменами жанров, я всегда бываю консервативен и весьма неуступчив. Но ваше глубоко продуманное письмо, полное живых душевных движений, задало мне задачу, к которой я был совсем не готов. Ваши доводы, при опоре на ваш режиссерский опыт и на репутацию вашего театра, обезоруживают меня от возражений, которыми бы я, вероятно, ответил в другом случае… Да будет оправдан ваш замысел творческой удачей» (из письма А. Солженицына Г. Исаакяну). Пожелание сбылось – пермский спектакль, получивший заочное благословение автора первоисточника, снискал заслуженное признание.

Будущая постановка заинтересовала еще одно важное действующее лицо нынешней премьеры – сына писателя Игната Солженицына, известного пианиста и дирижера, согласившегося стать членом постановочной команды. (Ему уже приходилось однажды дирижировать этой оперой, но в концертном исполнении, которое состоялось четыре года назад в рамках проводимого в Нижнем Новгороде Международного фестиваля искусств имени А.Д. Сахарова).

«Эту повесть обязан прочитать и выучить наизусть каждый гражданин изо всех двухсот миллионов граждан Советского Союза». Возможно, какие-то граждане пойдут «от обратного» – и выполнят завет Анны Ахматовой после посещения нашего спектакля?
