The opening of the Salzburg Festival is traditionally an outstanding event. In 2010 the festival, considered by many to be the most renowned music festival in the world, celebrated its 90th anniversary and at the same time the 50th anniversary of the Great Festival Hall. Daniel Barenboim, one of the leading pianists and conductors of our time, has performed as a soloist and conductor; 45 years ago he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival. The opening concert began with Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with Daniel Barenboim as soloist and conductor. Five "Notations" for orchestra by Pierre Boulez followed; the acclaimed concert ended with Anton Bruckner's "Te Deum" with the vocal soloists Dorothea Röschmann, Elina Garanca,

Only a few artists are lucky enough to build up a career as an instrumentalist and conductor at the same time, which enables them to rank among the best in the world in both fields. Born in Buenos Aires in 1942, Daniel Barenboim learned the piano from his parents and gave his first concert at the age of seven. He later attended Igor Markevitch's conducting class in Salzburg and studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In the 1950s Daniel Barenboim made his debut as a pianist, went on concert tours and made recordings with famous orchestras and conductors. In the 1960s he concentrated more on conducting, and since then Barenboim has become world-renowned as a concert pianist, chamber musician and conductor in equal measure.

Together with the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said (1935-2003) he founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 1999; Israeli, Palestinian and Arab musicians play here as a sign of the rapprochement of hostile ethnic groups. Based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe's collection of poems of the same name, the orchestra bears the name West-Eastern Divan.

Barenboim is involved in both political and cultural matters and has received numerous prizes and awards. In December 2011 he became music director of La Scala in Milan, and in autumn 2012 he received the Echo Klassik award for his life's work; In 2013 he was awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Daniel Barenboim was named Artist of the Year at the 2013 Classic Brit Awards.
