Behind the scenes in the cardboard world of Steef de Jong | Dutch National Opera

In the family performance Operetta Land , theater maker Steef de Jong takes you along in a compelling story, full of everything that makes operetta so irresistible: romance, misunderstandings, mistaken identity, cunning and above all: delightful music. He seamlessly forges together songs by composers such as Strauss, Offenbach and Sullivan into a brand new, contemporary operetta for all ages.

Meet the unapproachable Princess Galathea, the love-hungry lady-in-waiting Lady Kant, the sneaky King Pygmalion, the mysterious Prince Nicola and many other striking figures.

Steef de Jong has been very successful for years with his performances in which he stimulates the imagination of the spectators with ingeniously constructed cardboard sets. For his work Steef draws on the rich history of the operetta, the light-hearted and challenging sister of the opera. Now he is bringing his versatile working method to the big stage of Dutch National Opera for the first time. Young musicians from the National Youth Orchestra dive into the operetta repertoire under the direction of Lorenzo Viotti, chief conductor of Dutch National Opera, and Aldert Vermeulen. A cast of young singers, including from the Dutch National Opera Studio, interpret the eccentric characters in this festive production.
