Wie kaum eine andere Oper hat Christoph Willibald Glucks »Orfeo ed Euridice« den Entwicklungsgang des Genres beeinflusst: Das 1762 in Wien uraufgeführte Werk bündelte auf geradezu mustergültige Weise die zahlreichen Reformansätze seiner Zeit. Die traditionelle »Opera seria« wurde durch Glucks »Azione teatrale«, die den natürlichen, authentischen Ausdruck der Figuren in den Mittelpunkt stellt, herausgefordert und gewissermaßen überwunden.

Der Orpheus-Mythos, der die Form der Oper selbst begründete und bis heute zu den beliebtesten Stoffen des Musiktheaters zählt, hatte mit Gluck eine vollkommen neue Ausformung gefunden. Seine Verarbeitung der Geschichte von Orpheus, der die Götter der Unterwelt mit seinem Gesang betörte, um seine geliebte Eurydike ins Leben zurückholen, ist von einer bis dahin nicht gekannten dramatischen Wahrhaftigkeit und lässt das Publikum tiefen Anteil nehmen an der Gefühlswelt der Protagonisten.

Christoph Willibald Gluck's »Orfeo ed Euridice« influenced the development of the genre like hardly any other opera: the work, which premiered in Vienna in 1762, bundled the numerous reform attempts of its time in an almost exemplary way. The traditional »opera seria« was challenged and, to a certain extent, overcome by Gluck's »Azione teatrale«, which focuses on the natural, authentic expression of the characters.

The Orpheus myth, which founded the form of the opera itself and is still one of the most popular subjects of music theater, found a completely new form with Gluck. His treatment of the story of Orpheus, who beguiled the gods of the underworld with his singing in order to bring his beloved Eurydice back to life, is of a hitherto unknown dramatic truthfulness and allows the audience to take a deep interest in the emotional world of the protagonists.
