Orfeo ed Euridice de Gluck es unos de los pocos títulos operísticos del siglo XVIII que puede presumir de no haber perdido jamás el aprecio del público. Aparte de la perseverante fama de su número más célebre –«Che farò senza Euridice?»–, la obra fue defendida durante el siglo XIX por algunas de las estrellas más rutilantes del firmamento lírico como el tenor Adolphe Nourrit –primer Eléazar de La judía y Raoul de Los hugonotes– o la contralto Pauline Viardot –primera Fidès de El profeta–, así como por el compositor Hector Berlioz, quien llegó a reorquestar la obra para su presentación en la Ópera de París. Hoy en día –no hace falta recordarlo– el rol de Orfeo es disputado indistintamente por las mezzosopranos, tenores y contratenores más sobresalientes.

Más allá de estos aspectos, este Orfeo descolló en su tiempo por su avanzado lenguaje orquestal y por un concepto dramático alejado de las convenciones de su tiempo que repercutió en una partitura compacta y audaz que influyó poderosamente en el joven Mozart. El tercer Orfeo de la temporada llega además al Real de la mano de René Jacobs, avezado descubridor de los pliegues –léase, tesoros– ocultos en los pentagramas operísticos de los periodos clásico y barroco.

Orfeo Ed Euridice by Gluck is one of the few opera titles of the 18th century which can presume to have never lost out on audience appreciation. Besides the enduring fame of its most famous moment –«Che farò senza Euridice?» –, the work was sustained during the 19th century by some of the most glittering voices of the day such as the tenor Adolphe Nourrit –who debuted Eléazar of La juive and Raoul of Les Huguenots– or the contralto Pauline Viardot –who premiered Fidès of Le prophète–, or composer Hector Berlioz, who re-orchestrated the opera for its presentation at the Ópera de París.  Today -   a reminder isn’t necessary - the role of Orfeo is sung indistinctly by the most acclaimed mezzo-sopranos, tenors and countertenors.  

Over and above these aspects, this Orfeo stood out in its day for advanced orchestral language and a dramatic concept, far from established conventions, which had an effect on its compact and audacious score; and  that powerfully influenced the young Mozart.  The third Orfeo of this season comes to the Teatro Real in the hands of René Jacobs, an experienced explorer of the hidden treasure in the operatic staves of the Classic and Baroque periods.
