Orgia is a new opera, composed by Héctor Parra expressly for this occasion, previously commissioned by the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Peralada Festival. The three appear as co-producers of this show with a libretto by Calixto Bieito and conceived for three singers and a top-level instrumental group, none other than the Ensemble Intercontemporain de Paris, the world-renowned ensemble created in 1976 by Pierre Boulez, (great composer , conductor and intellectual). This formation already visited the Arriaga in the year 2000 starring in a concert entitled precisely Pierre Boulez, within the cycle Twelve concerts for the 700, organized to commemorate the anniversary of the foundation of the town. Now it is a real luxury to have the Ensemble Intercontemporain for a project as special as Orgia, based on the impressive play by Pier Paolo Pasolini. And as soloists, the stage will host the magnificent Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte together with the English baritone Leigh Melrose, two figures of today's opera who have previously worked with Bieito, who will be joined by another soprano, Jone Martínez, whom we have also been able to enjoy in other productions of the Arriaga Theater such as Vivaldi, a poem for strings and two voices, directed by Bieito himself.

Starting from the original text of Orgia, in this opera -imagined for years from the two operatic collaborations between Calixto Bieito and Hèctor Parra: Wilde (2015) and Les Bienveillantes (2019) and the Peralada Festival proposal- conceives the possibility of extracting a musical poetics in lyrical form. Thus, the Pasolini word crystallized in sound becomes an element of inestimable value for the composer's work: a dialogue between poetry and music that contributes -in Pasolini's own words- to a "high and indefinable expressive action like the actions of the reality".

To denounce his personal drama, the male protagonist of Orgia hangs himself after dressing as a woman. In fact, in the last moments of his life, she becomes aware of her homosexuality, and his suicide thus becomes an accusatory act. It is an opportunity to denounce an intolerant, hypocritical, cruel and contemptuous society with all those who go beyond the established norms, thus bearing witness to the insurmountable gap that discriminates against them.

Through verses endowed with sublime poetry that penetrates reality in an overwhelming way, Pasolini denounces the way in which fascism survives and annihilates all traces of humanity in modern society through consumer culture. Anticipating Salò or the 120 days of Sodom (1975) by almost ten years, in Orgia (1966) love and sex are at the service of a sadistic destruction of the other. Inside her bedroom, a closed space where anguish and remorse cast monstrous shadows in the uncertain transition between the world of reason and that of dreams, the young co-star mother, after having perceived in her own body a "ridiculous breath of air", she prepares to fulfill her desire to break the chains that bind her to her husband. Just before committing suicide she performs the terrible act of Medea murdering her two children.

Orgia es una ópera nueva, compuesta por Héctor Parra ex profeso para esta ocasión, previo encargo del Teatro Arriaga de Bilbao, del Gran Teatre del Liceu y del Festival de Peralada. Los tres figuran como coproductores de este espectáculo con libreto de Calixto Bieito y concebido para tres cantantes y un grupo instrumental de primer nivel, nada menos que el Ensemble Intercontemporain de Paris, el conjunto mundialmente reconocido y creado en 1976 por Pierre Boulez, (gran compositor, director de orquesta e intelectual). Esta formación ya visitó el Arriaga en en año 2000 protagonizando un concierto titulado precisamente Pierre Boulez, dentro del ciclo Doce conciertos para el 700, organizado en conmemoración del aniversario de la fundación de la villa. Ahora es un verdadero lujo contar con el Ensemble Intercontemporain para un proyecto propio tan especial como Orgia, basado en la impactante obra de teatro de Pier Paolo Pasolini. Y como solistas, el escenario acogerá a la magnífica soprano lituana Ausrine Stundyte junto al barítono inglés Leigh Melrose, dos figuras de la lírica actual que ya han trabajado con anterioridad con Bieito, a quienes se suma otra soprano, Jone Martínez, a quien también hemos podido disfrutar en otras producciones del Teatro Arriaga como Vivaldi, poema para cuerda y dos voces, dirigida por el propio Bieito.

A partir del texto original de Orgia, en esta ópera –imaginada desde hace años a partir de las dos colaboraciones operísticas entre Calixto Bieito y Hèctor Parra: Wilde (2015) y Les Bienveillantes (2019) y de la propuesta del Festival de Peralada- se concibe la posibilidad de extraer una poética musical bajo forma lírica. Así, la palabra pasoliniana cristalizada en sonido se convierte en un elemento de inestimable valor para el trabajo del compositor: un diálogo entre poesía y música que contribuye -en palabras del propio Pasolini- a una «acción expresiva elevada e indefinible como las acciones de la realidad».

Para denunciar su drama personal, el protagonista masculino de Orgia se ahorca tras vestirse de mujer. De hecho, en los últimos momentos de su vida, toma conciencia de su homosexualidad, y su suicidio se convierte así en un acto acusador. Es una oportunidad para denunciar una sociedad intolerante, hipócrita, cruel y despectiva con todos aquellos que se salen de las normas establecidas, dando así testimonio de la insuperable brecha que los discrimina.

A través de unos versos dotados de una poesía sublime que penetra la realidad de forma sobrecogedora, Pasolini denuncia el modo en que el fascismo sobrevive y aniquila todo rastro de humanidad en la sociedad moderna a través de la cultura de consumo. Anticipando Salò o los 120 días de Sodoma (1975) en casi diez años, en Orgia (1966) el amor y el sexo están al servicio de una destrucción sádica del otro. En el interior de su dormitorio, un espacio cerrado donde la angustia y el remordimiento proyectan sombras monstruosas en la incierta transición entre el mundo de la razón y el del sueño, la joven madre coprotagonista, tras haber percibido en su propio cuerpo un «irrisorio soplo de aire», se dispone a cumplir su deseo de romper las cadenas que la unen a su marido. Justo antes de suicidarse realiza el terrible acto de Medea asesinando sus dos hijos.
