Die Oper »Orlando« ist eines der musikalisch reichsten, emotional und intellektuell fesselndsten und strukturell radikalsten Stücke, die mir je begegnet sind. Damit ist er die perfekte Ergänzung zum »Sommernachtstraum« am Beginn unserer Spielzeit. Er ist eine wilde, experimentelle Mischung, die sich normalen Erzählungen und Genrevorstellungen entzieht, ja widersetzt.«

Wie die drei großen Mozart-Da Ponte-Opern ist »Orlando« für den Intendanten der Oper, Walter Sutcliffe, paradox. Er kommt im Gewand einer harmlosen Komödie über eine unsinnige Liebe daher. Hinter dem Schleier der Harmlosigkeit lotet er aber in epischer Ausführlichkeit die Untiefen der menschlichen Seele aus. »Orlando« stellt die Fragen, die sich jede Generation wieder stellen und für sich beantworten muss. Es geht um Geschlechterpolitik, Männer- und Frauenbilder, Identität, toxische Männlichkeit, Wahrheit und Einbildung. Diese Stichworte bezeichnen die Stationen eines Albtraums, den das erotische Begehren auslöst. Alle Gewissheiten werden bis in den Grund erschüttert und brechen restlos zusammen. Doch nach den Irrungen, Wirrungen finden die Held*innen am Ende ihr wahres Ich. Es ist eines der positivsten und negativsten Werke, die Händel je geschrieben hat.

Mit »Orlando« wurden die Händel-Festspiele im Stadttheater Halle vor genau 100 Jahren eröffnet. Es war das erste Mal, dass man die romantische Oper über den aus Liebe wahnsinnig gewordenen Ritter seit der Uraufführung 1733 in London wieder hören konnte. Mit Walter Sutcliffes Inszenierung – der vierten hier in diesen 100 Jahren – feiern die Händel-Festspiele ihr Jubiläum.

The opera »Orlando« is one of the richest musically, emotionally and intellectually absorbing and structurally radical pieces I have ever encountered. This makes it the perfect complement to »A Midsummer Night's Dream« at the beginning of our season. It is a wild, experimental mixture that defies, even defies, normal narratives and genre ideas.«

Like the three great Mozart-Da Ponte operas, "Orlando" is paradoxical for the opera's artistic director, Walter Sutcliffe. It comes in the guise of a harmless comedy about a senseless love. Behind the veil of harmlessness, however, he plumbs the depths of the human soul in epic detail. »Orlando« poses the questions that every generation has to ask itself and answer for itself. It's about gender politics, images of men and women, identity, toxic masculinity, truth and imagination. These keywords describe the stages of a nightmare triggered by erotic desire. All certainties are shaken to the ground and collapse completely. But after the trials and tribulations, the heroes find their true selves in the end. It is one of the most positive and negative works

The Handel Festival in the Stadttheater Halle opened exactly 100 years ago with »Orlando«. It was the first time that the romantic opera about the knight who had gone mad because of love could be heard again since it was first performed in London in 1733. The Handel Festival is celebrating its anniversary with Walter Sutcliffe's production – the fourth here in these 100 years.
