In order to destroy a man, one must know his weaknesses. And Jago can and knows both. Otello, the successful commander of the Venetian fleet, has been a thorn in his side for a long time. Iago begrudges him the fame and his wife Desdemona. Using fictitious clues, he perfidiously arouses doubts in Otello about Desdemona's loyalty. Otello is caught in his net and gets caught in a nightmarish downward spiral of hate and despair with deadly consequences: In the end, Otello murders his beloved wife in the paranoid madness of his raging jealousy.

Verdi's penultimate opera OTELLO thrives on its emotionally gripping, musico-dramatic stringency. With her, the composer once again set standards in the development of the genre in his old age.

Director Verena Stoiber transfers the action into the world of the theatre. The close connection between cinematic video sequences and the live performance on stage skillfully explores the boundaries between fiction and reality. Iago's intrigues become a veritable game from which there is no escape.
