Otello  is the opera that, at its first audition at La Scala in Milan, in 1887, caused the audience to call the performers back on stage in applause, no less than 20 times, by exclaiming: "VIVA Verdi ! " – composer whose name is synonymous with the opera.

The quintessential Verdian creation represents a stunning fusion of music and dramatic art, a masterpiece that stands out not only for its philosophical depth, but also proves to be disturbing and thrilling from a theatrical point of view.

The story of the famous libretto belongs to Shakespeare, which centers on the hero Otello, whose manifestations are surprised when his jealousy gets out of control, when he thinks that his adored and candid love, Desdemona, has disappointed him. Thus, a dark and earth-shattering revenge is triggered, which takes love to the border between the divine and the infernal, leading to a tragic and unjust ending.

Unusually, the symbol of this tragedy, entrusted to carry the narrative thread, is not an object that suggests gravity, drama, but takes the form of a simple handkerchief; the fact that a seemingly insignificant object has a decisive weight in the work argues in favor of the sensitivity of jealous minds and small incidents that, hyperbolized on a psychological level, turn into "evidence" of love or betrayal.

Otello este opera care, la prima sa audiție la Scala din Milano, în anul 1887, a determinat publicul să recheme interpreții în aplauze, pe scenă, nu mai puțin de 20 de ori, prin exclamația: „VIVA Verdi!” – compozitor al cărui nume este sinonim cu opera.

Creația verdiană prin excelență reprezintă o îmbinare uluitoare a muzicii cu arta dramatică, o capodoperă ce se evidențiază nu numai prin profunzime filosofică, ci se dovedește a fi, totodată, tulburătoare și palpitantă din punct de vedere teatral.

Povestea celebrului libret îi aparține lui Shakespeare, ce îl are în centru pe eroul Otello, ale cărui manifestări sunt surpinse atunci când gelozia îi scapă de sub control, în momentul în care crede că adorata și candida sa dragoste, Desdemona, l-a dezamăgit. Se declanșează, astfel, o răzbunare întunecată și cutremurătoare, ce duce iubirea la limita dintre divin și infern, conducând la un final tragic și nedrept.

În mod neobișnuit, simbolul acestei tragedii, încredințat să poarte firul narativ, nu este un obiect care să sugereze gravitate, dramatism, ci ia forma unei simple batiste; faptul că un obiect aparent neînsemnat are o greutate decisivă în lucrare pledează în favoarea sensibilității minților geloase și a micilor incidente care, hiperbolizate la nivel psihologic, se preschimbă în „dovezi” ale dragostei sau ale trădării.
