Oh, the power of love, power that can turn a person into an animal

Storms are raging on the coast of Cyprus and the people have gathered in the port to watch in horror as a ship returning from a military campaign against the Turks attempts to make landfall. To everyone´s relief, the ship anchors safely and the crowd welcomes the victorious Otello. A stunning choral performance then ensues, dramatically commencing one of Verdi’s most famous operas, before the story moves on to the dangerous interplay of intrigues and jealousy that arise around Otello and his wife Desdemona thanks to the machinations of the treacherous Iago. Shakespeare´s famous tragedy has been staged for more than four hundred years, and it still hasn’t lost any of its relevance. Giuseppe Verdi was a great admirer of Shakespeare´s work, and he considered the possibility of setting one of his plays to music many times. Aside from his version of Macbeth, at the end of Verdi´s life he finally chose Otello. This time, he was lucky not only to have found an excellent topic, but also a great librettist, as his collaborator was none other than the Italian poet and composer Arrigo Boito, who helped him flesh out his ideas into an ideal form. Verdi´s penultimate opera is truly a masterpiece, with three-dimensionally depicted characters and grand choral scenes that alternate with intimate lyrical moments. The role of Otello tests the skills of the best of heroic tenors, as Verdi imbued it with every shade of the human soul – at first portrayed as a warrior, and then as a tender and loving man, Otello finally transforms into a wounded animal consumed by jealousy. This unique work by Verdi is returning to the Brno stage after more than thirty years away.

An der Küste Zyperns wütet ein Sturm, und das im Hafen versammelte Volk verfolgt bange, wie ein vom Kriegszug gegen die Türken zurückgekehrtes Schiff anzulegen versucht. Zur Erleichterung aller geht das Schiff sicher vor Anker, und die Menge begrüßt den siegreichen Otello. Mit einem mitreißenden Chorauftritt beginnt Verdi hochdramatisch eine seine berühmtesten Opern, um sogleich den verräterischen Jago ein gefährliches Spiel der Intrigen und der Eifersucht rund um Otello und seine Ehefrau Desdemona anzetteln zu lassen. Shakespeares berühmte Tragödie wird seit über vierhundert Jahren gespielt und hat dabei nichts von ihrer Aktualität verloren. Giuseppe Verdi zählte zu den großen Bewunderern von Shakespeares Werk und hat sich viele Male mit der Möglichkeit beschäftigt, eines der Schauspiele des großen Dramatikers zu vertonen. Nach Macbeth fiel Verdis Wahl gegen Ende seines Lebens auf Otello. Diesmal hatte er nicht nur mit dem ausgezeichneten Sujet, sondern auch mit dem Librettisten eine glückliche Hand, fand er doch in der Person des italienischen Dichters und Komponisten Arrigo Boito einen Mitarbeiter, der ihm dabei half, seine Vorstellungen in die ideale Form zu bringen. Verdis vorletzte Oper ist ein wahrhaftes Meisterwerk mit plastisch gezeichneten Charakteren, wo sich grandiose Chorszenen und intime, lyrische Partien abwechseln. Otello ist der Prüfstein der Heldentenöre, eine Rolle, in die Verdi alle Schattierungen der menschlichen Seele gelegt hat – vom Krieger über den zärtlichen und liebevollen Ehemann bis hin zu einem von der Eifersucht zerfressenen verletzten Tier. Auf die Brünner Bühne kehrt dieses einzigartige Werk Verdis nach mehr als dreißig Jahren zurück.

Verdi, Shakespeare a téma předsudku a odlišnosti jedince ve společnosti – to je spojení slibující velké drama. Verdiho předposlední opera je dílem vskutku mistrovským s plasticky vykres­lenými charaktery, kde velkolepé sborové scény střídají intimní lyrická místa.

U břehů Kypru zuří bouře a lid shromážděný v přístavu s hrůzou sle­duje, jak se loď vracející se z válečného tažení proti Turkům, pokouší přistát. K úlevě všech loď bezpečně zakotví a dav vítá vítězného Ote­lla. Strhujícím sborovým výstupem Verdi dramaticky zahajuje jednu ze svých nejslavnějších oper, aby vzápětí rozehrál prostřednictvím zrádného Jaga nebezpečnou hru intrik a žárlivosti kolem Otella a jeho ženy Desdemony.

Slavná Shakespearova tragédie je na divadelních jevištích víc než čtyři sta let a stále neztratila nic na své aktuálnosti a Verdiho hudba jí dodává další rozměr. Otello je prubířským kamenem hrdinných tenorů, role, do které Verdi vložil všechny odstíny lidské duše – od válečníka, přes něžného a milujícího muže po raněné zvíře sžírané žárlivostí. Na brněnské jeviš­tě se toto jedinečné Verdiho dílo vrátilo po více než třiceti letech.
