libretto: Arrigo Boito na podstawie dramatu Williama Szekspira

Bitewne zwycięstwa, miłość podwładnych, ukochana żona – los jest łaskawy dla Otella. Jednak szczęśliwe chwile przemijają niepostrzeżenie, gdy umysłem bohatera zaczyna rządzić podejrzliwość, a sercem – zazdrość. Nękające Otella pytanie o wierność pięknej Desdemony spycha go w otchłań zwątpienia i prowadzi do zagłady.

Okrzyknięty arcydziełem opery tragicznej „Otello” potwierdził muzyczny geniusz Verdiego, który po sukcesie Aidy zamilkł na kilkanaście lat. I choć kompozytor nie próżnował, bo stworzył nową wersję „Don Carlosa”, wycyzelował „Simona Boccanegrę” i upamiętnił poruszającą „Messa da Requiem” swego młodego przyjaciela Alessandra Manzoniego, to publiczność domagała się kolejnych operowych hitów na miarę „Traviaty” czy „Rigoletta”. Znajomość z Arrigiem Boito, uzdolnionym poetą i kompozytorem, zaowocowała triumfalnym powrotem Verdiego na scenę. Zapewne młodzieńcza odwaga sprawiła, że Boito bez obaw podjął współpracę z kompozytorem i bez drżenia pióra przysposobił dramat Szekspira do wymogów operowego libretta, tworząc dzieło niemal idealne. Doskonałość tchnęła w nie muzyka Verdiego.

„Otello” w reżyserskiej interpretacji Davida Pountney’a i pod kierownictwem muzycznym Jacka Kaspszyka to jedno z największych wydarzeń sezonu 2023/2024. Utkana z podszeptów fałszywych sprzymierzeńców intryga zestawiona z pełną pasji muzyką wprowadzi nas z świat mrocznych tajemnic ludzkiego umysłu. Miłość, zazdrość, zbrodnia – temat tak samo nośny w czasach Szekspira, Verdiego i współczesnych.

Battle victories, love of subordinates, beloved wife - fate is kind to Othello. However, the happy moments pass unnoticed when the hero's mind begins to be ruled by suspicion and his heart by jealousy. Othello's haunting question about the fidelity of the beautiful Desdemona pushes him into the abyss of doubt and leads to his destruction.

Hailed as a masterpiece of tragic opera, "Otello" confirmed the musical genius of Verdi, who fell silent for several years after the success of Aida . And although the composer was not idle, because he created a new version of "Don Carlos", polished "Simon Boccanegra" and commemorated the moving "Messa da Requiem" by his young friend Alessandro Manzoni, the audience demanded more opera hits like "La Traviata" or "Rigoletto". . Acquaintance with Arrigio Boito, a talented poet and composer, resulted in Verdi's triumphant return to the stage. It was probably his youthful courage that made Boito work with the composer without any fear and, without shaking his pen, adapting Shakespeare's drama to the requirements of an opera libretto, creating an almost perfect work. Verdi's music breathed perfection into them.

"Othello", directed by David Pountney and under the musical direction of Jacek Kaspszyk, is one of the greatest events of the 2023/2024 season. An intrigue woven from the whispers of false allies combined with passionate music will introduce us to the world of the dark secrets of the human mind. Love, jealousy, crime - a topic equally relevant in the times of Shakespeare, Verdi and today.
