The psychological differentiation of people reaches new heights thanks to Shakespeare's original, whose highest truth Verdi does not encounter with verismo, which he distrusts, but with the conviction that ultimately music can do more than words. The orchestra therefore plays an extremely important role as a partner to the singers. In addition, «Otello» has a rousing effect, especially for an «old man's work». From the gigantic storm with which the opera begins, to Otello's death, there is no lessening of inner tension. Another merit stated the novelist Antonio Fogazzaro: Verdi had done art the great service that from now on it would be impossible to set absurd acts and pathetic verses to music. Graham Vick, one of the great British opera directors, introduces himself to our company. Chief conductor Daniele Gatti has taken over the musical direction of this new production. The Argentine tenor José Cura can be seen in the title role, while Thomas Hampson expands his Verdi repertoire to include the highly demanding role of Iago.
