Genre envoutant alliant en une forme concise la dramaturgie de l’opéra et l’esthétique à la fois intimiste et avant-gardiste de la musique de chambre, la cantate connaît son âge d’or durant la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Ce programme, composé en miroir, invite à mettre en regard ses évolutions stylistiques en France et en Italie ; où les plus grands maîtres du genre s’attachent à mettre en musique les joies et les peines universelles de l’amour.

D’un côté, les salons parisiens, où résonnent deux cantates pour soprano, un ou deux dessus, et basse continue : Le Dépit généreux de Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), qui dépeint la tristesse d’une femme abandonnée par son amant infidèle, et Léandre et Héro de Louis Nicolas Clerambault (1676-1749), véritable tragédie lyrique réduite, avec sa tempête, ses interventions divines, et finalement la réunion heureuse des deux personnages éponymes.

De l’autre, l’univers de l’Académie d’Arcadie, et son idéal esthétique de simplicité, de naturel, dépouillé de toute emphase : Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) en est l’un des plus talentueux représentants, composant plusieurs centaines de cantates, parmi lesquelles Appena chiudo gl’occhi et Quella pace gradita, qui affrontent l’une et l’autre les douleurs de l’absence avec une rare intensité expressive.

Des sonates en trio de Couperin et Handel – qui côtoie Scarlatti et d’autres académiciens lors de son séjour romain au début du XVIIIe siècle – ponctuent ces oeuvres vocales et complètent avec bonheur ce voyage en diptyque de Paris à Rome.

A bewitching genre combining in a concise form the dramaturgy of opera and the intimate yet avant-garde aesthetic of chamber music, the cantata experienced its golden age during the first half of the 18th century . This program, composed as a mirror, invites us to look at his stylistic developments in France and Italy; where the greatest masters of the genre endeavor to set to music the universal joys and sorrows of love.

On one side, the Parisian salons, where two cantatas resonate for soprano, one or two treble, and basso continuo: Le Dépit Genereux by Michel Pignolet de Montclair (1667-1737), which depicts the sadness of a woman abandoned by her unfaithful lover, and Léandre et Héro by Louis Nicolas Clerambault (1676-1749), a real reduced lyrical tragedy, with its tempest, its divine interventions, and finally the happy reunion of the two eponymous characters.

On the other, the universe of the Academy of Arcadia, and its aesthetic ideal of simplicity, naturalness, stripped of all emphasis: Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) is one of its most talented representatives, composing several hundreds of cantatas, including Appena chiudo gl'occhi and Quella pace gradita , both of which confront the pains of absence with rare expressive intensity.

Trio sonatas by Couperin and Handel – who rubbed shoulders with Scarlatti and other academicians during his stay in Rome at the start of the 18th century – punctuate these vocal works and happily complete this journey in a diptych from Paris to Rome.
