At an imprecise time. A mythical country. A King. A storybook castle. Two stepbrothers: Pelléas and Goulad. And a beautiful girl, Mélisande, of indeterminate age and origin, who is lost and found in the forest. A marriage. An unhappy wife who discovers a soul mate in her brother-in-law. Jealousies. A crime.

The premiere in 1902 of the only opera of Claude Debussy was a scandal. It was a rarity between Verismo and Romanticism. Today, its hypnotic, unreal story takes us on a journey into a spellbinding world, alternating real drama with the imaginary.

Inspired by a fairytale for adults by the symbolist poet Maurice Maeterlink, Debussy composed the first modern opera. Delicate, sinuous, subtle. A drama of light conducted by the great specialist in French opera, Michel Plasson, with staging by Willy Decker for the Hamburg Staatsoper. It is opera. It is pure poetry.
