Insights into the main piano rehearsal. In his fishing village somewhere on the east coast of England, Peter Grimes is the outsider, but is he also a killer? In his opera, Benjamin Britten draws the psychogram of a village community as well as that of a man who, under the magnifying glass of provincial narrowness, perishes from the never-ending slander and defamation of his fellow human beings.

A young man dies in a small English fishing village. A tragic accident at sea? The village assumes that the outsider, the fisherman Peter Grimes, is to blame and in whose service the dead man was, and gangs up against him ever more closely: Is Peter Grimes a murderer? He is acquitted in court, and yet there is no break in the heat in the inn. It seems only a matter of a few hours, because: »Look, a storm is coming! Like a pack of wild beasts!”

Benjamin Britten, who sets the story in his home region, lets the emotional loneliness and the search to find a place in society sound in a touching way, before a few moments later the sea gently washes around us and lures us further and further out until it is able to pull us down into the abysses of the soul: "What harbor will receive me, far away from the wild tide, far away from the storm?"

In einem kleinen englischen Fischerdorf stirbt ein junger Mann. Ein tragischer Unfall auf hoher See? Das Dorf vermutet die Schuld beim Außenseiter, dem Fischer Peter Grimes, in dessen Diensten der Tote stand, und rottet sich immer geschlossener gegen ihn zusammen: Ist Peter Grimes ein Mörder ? Vor Gericht wird er freigesprochen, und dennoch erfährt die Erhitzung im Wirtshaus keine Pause. Es scheint nur mehr eine Frage von wenigen Stunden zu sein, denn: »Seht, ein Sturm kommt! Wie ein Rudel wilder Tiere!«

Benjamin Britten, der die Geschichte in seiner Heimatregion ansiedelt, lässt die seelische Einsamkeit sowie die Suche, einen Platz in der Gesellschaft zu finden, in berührender Art und Weise ertönen, bevor uns wenige Augenblicke später das Meer sanft umspült und immer weiter hinauslockt, bis es uns in die seelischen Abgründe hinunterzuziehen vermag: »Welch Hafen nimmt mich auf, weit ab von wilder Flut, weit ab vom Sturm?«
