U tami i beznađu sadašnjice očekujemo, nadamo se... Slijedi uskrsnuće. Tako čovječanstvu govori Gustav Mahler svojom 2. simfonijom.

 

„To je neopisiv ugođaj“, napisao je tako prijatelju nakon nekoliko proba u siječnju 1895. „Da iskreno opišem koliko se divim ovom nevjerojatnom djelu, zvučao bih prearogantno. (…) Cijela simfonija zvuči kao da potječe iz nekog drugog svijeta. Čovjek joj ne može odoljeti. Onaj koji je sluša prvo pada na zemlju, a onda se na anđeoskim krilima uzdiže do sedmog neba“ – Gustav Mahler.

In the darkness and hopelessness of present day we await and hope... Then comes the “resurrection”. This is the message for mankind conveyed by Gustav Mahler in his Symphony No. 2. “The effect is so great that one cannot describe it,” he wrote to a friend after some preliminary rehearsals in January 1895. “If I were to say what I think of this great work, it would sound too arrogant in a letter. [...] The whole thing sounds as though it came to us from some other world. I think there is no one who can resist it. One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel’s wings to the highest heights” – Gustav Mahler.
