To właśnie magnetyzująca muzyka czyni z Porgy and Bess przebój zdobywający serca publiczności na całym świecie od ponad ośmiu dekad. Opera opowiada historię miłosną rozgrywającą się w portowej dzielnicy Charlestonu, w społeczności ubogich Afroamerykanów.

Summertime, I Got Plenty O' Nuttin', I Loves You, Porgy - these are songs known to everyone. They have become standards eagerly interpreted by jazzmen, popular music singers and pop stars. It is the magnetizing music that makes Porgy and Bess a hit that has won the hearts of audiences around the world for over eight decades. The opera tells a love story set in the port district of Charleston, in a community of poor African Americans.

The catchy melodies owe their unique charm to the combination of typically American music with African roots - jazz, ragtime, blues and spirituals - with classical music and even Eastern European folklore. George Gershwin, considered by many to be the greatest American composer, wove music inspired by various traditions into the convention of opera. So we have fiery duets, funny group scenes with the participation of the choir, touching solo performances.

The performance of the concert version of the work will be conducted by Wayne Marshall, chief conductor of the WDR Funkhausorchester Köln, specializing in the interpretation of 20th-century American music.
