The Seasons by Joseph Haydn is one of the greatest oratorio works in the history of music. It is not only a perfect summary of the composer's musical activity, but also a reflection of his thoughts, worldview and values. Moreover, this piece inspired the artistic director of the festival - Giovanni Antonini - to take up topics related to nature in a broad sense. During the concert, the maestro will lead the musicians of Il Giardino Armonico in his performance.

Undoubtedly, the greatest importance in Haydn's vocal work are two oratorios: The Creation from 1798 and The Seasons, written less than three years later . The artist composed them under the supervision of Baron Gottfried van Swieten - an Austrian patron of art, who also significantly influenced the musical career of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Van Swieten's libretto was based on fragments of the English poem The Seasons by the poet and playwright James Thomson, published in the first half of the eighteenth century. Although there were some verbal clashes, the effect of their actions was truly stunning. The Baron not only undertook work on the textual layer of the work, but also regularly drew Haydn's attention to the closer connections between words and music, as evidenced by numerous annotations on the manuscript of the libretto.

Haydn himself appears here as an outstanding instrumentator and creator, presenting the audience with subsequent perfectly captured musical interpretations of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The composer's sound painting, paid for with hard work, perfectly reflects the mood of each season. It is not a collection of a few trivial scenes, but perfectly thought-out formal arrangements. At the time of writing the oratorio, the artist was at the peak of his creative abilities. Shortly afterwards, due to his deteriorating health, he stopped composing completely. He died in May 1809, and the mentioned oratorio remained his last work.

Pory roku Josepha Haydna to jedno z największych dzieł oratoryjnych w historii muzyki. Jest ono nie tylko doskonałym podsumowaniem działalności muzycznej kompozytora, ale i odzwierciedleniem jego myśli, światopoglądu i wartości. Co więcej, utwór ten zainspirował dyrektora artystycznego festiwalu – Giovanniego Antoniniego – do podjęcia tematyki związanej z szeroko pojmowaną naturą. Podczas koncertu maestro poprowadzi muzyków Il Giardino Armonico w jego wykonaniu.

Bez wątpienia największe znaczenie w twórczości wokalnej Haydna mają dwa oratoria: Stworzenie świata z 1798 roku i powstałe niespełna trzy lata później Pory roku. Artysta komponował je pod okiem barona Gottfrieda van Swietena – austriackiego mecenasa sztuki, który znacznie wpłynął również na  muzyczną karierę Wolfganga Amadeusa Mozarta. Libretto pióra van Swietena zostało oparte na fragmentach angielskiego poematu The Seasons autorstwa poety i dramaturga Jamesa Thomsona, opublikowanego w pierwszej połowie osiemnastego stulecia. Choć nie obyło się bez słownych starć, efekt ich działania jest wręcz olśniewający. Baron nie tylko podjął się pracy nad warstwą tekstową dzieła, ale regularnie zwracał również uwagę Haydna na bliższe związki słowa z muzyką, czego dowodem są liczne adnotacje na manuskrypcie libretta.

Sam Haydn jawi się tu jako znamienity instrumentator i twórca, przedstawiający odbiorcom kolejne doskonale ujęte muzyczne interpretacje następujących po sobie wiosny, lata, jesieni i zimy. Malarstwo dźwiękowe kompozytora, okupione ciężką pracą, w idealny sposób oddaje nastrój każdej z pór roku. Nie jest to zbiór kilku trywialnych scen, a znakomicie przemyślane układy formalne. Artysta w czasie pisania oratorium znajdował się u szczytu swych możliwości twórczych. Niedługo później, ze względu na pogarszający się stan zdrowia, całkowicie zaprzestał komponowania. Zmarł w maju 1809 roku, a wspomniane oratorium pozostało ostatnim dziełem w jego dorobku.
