Die Kammeroper »Powder Her Face« ist seit ihrer Uraufführung 1995 in England international eine der meistaufgeführten Opern Großbritanniens. Thomas Adès (*1971) traf mit diesem frühen kompositorischen Wurf offensichtlich einen Nerv: In sieben Bildern wird rückschauend und geschickt zwischen Imagination und Erinnerung changierend, das lustvolle wie skandalträchtige Leben der Upperclass-Lady Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll (1912–1993) geschildert. Musikalisch ist das Werk für 15 Instrumente und vier Solist*innen, die teilweise virtuos ihre zahlreichen Rollen wechseln, eine Hommage an die populären Musikstile ihrer Zeit von Swing bis Tango aber auch an Kurt Weill, Alban Berg und Igor Strawinsky.

Since its world premiere in England in 1995, the chamber opera »Powder Her Face« has been one of the most frequently performed operas in Great Britain. Thomas Adès (*1971) obviously struck a chord with this early compositional stroke: retrospectively and skilfully alternating between imagination and memory, seven images depict the joyful and scandalous life of upper-class lady Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll (1912–1993). . Musically, the work for 15 instruments and four soloists, some of whom change roles with virtuosity, is a homage to the popular musical styles of their time, from swing to tango, but also to Kurt Weill, Alban Berg and Igor Stravinsky.
