Bartered Bride is a comic opera in three acts, which is a frequent guest in the musical repertoire of European theaters. Smetana accepted Karel Sabina's libretto and a powerful folk opera with simple typed characters was created. The tradition of collective folk music and the joy of playing lasts from the opening beat to the finale. Although full of elements of Czech folklore, it requires a more modern reading. The action seems to belong to one of the film forms (sitcom, soap opera...) that when we watch, we know who is good and who is bad, and how everything will end. Everything is somehow predetermined, predestined. The scenography is a film set, i.e. an oversized film shutter that dominates the scene, and provides us with various possibilities for interpreting the space. Certain parts of the opera are recorded live, and the audience is drawn into the ambience of the cinema hall. The characters are skilful comic bravado found in Shakespearean-type plots. The whole plot revolves around the young lovers Marženka and Jenjika, whose parents, of course, do not support their relationship. Kecal, a village matchmaker, who, in the context of our stage space, is reminiscent of the mobsters from the film The Godfather gets involved in all of this. Despite his efforts to appear dangerous, he is very funny. The characters are aware that they are participating in a show, so they are sometimes reduced to stylized choreographic movements. A kind of departure from the typical operatic gesture has been achieved, unless we use it deliberately with a dose of plot emphasis and irony. Six actors take part in the opera and perform various roles – from stage workers, helpers, petty criminals to circus performers in the third act, together with two other acrobats. They are an essential refresher with their way of playing, which is not only silent acting for the sake of music, but also has spoken elements when possible. The choir is playful and dancing, a very active participant in the event. The show is a whirlwind audio-visual treat that the audience will, I have no doubt, enjoy. Our "bride" is a kind of birthday greeting on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Sarajevo Opera and 100th anniversary of the Sarajevo National Theater. On the occasion of the opera premiere

On the last day of November, with the opera premiere, let's raise the hope that the year ahead will be better than the previous one, or fulfill some intimate expectations. Tonight we have the opportunity to turn to the source of inspiration for the daily decisions we make and actions we do. It is the world of classical music and opera. Music, along with poetry, in ancient Greece was an expression of the sublime thought process of the human spirit. Muses were a source of inspiration and initiators of cultural creativity; considering that they were a medium between gods and people - between the eternal and the transitory, they sent messages to the world about timeless values ​​and virtues through those chosen on Earth. That's why I believe that the 75 years of the Opera's existence in the theater culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina will remain a permanent virtue and fact of musical and stage art. We play "The Bartered Bride" as a retrospective look at our creation, but with a new reading that is oriented towards the future, because we are aware that every good theater sought its way to the modern and avant-garde through tradition. That is why Opera is an eternal stage expression of magical beauty and skill. Pythagoras believed that music is the creator of the cosmos, and Plato was convinced that the state will be as the music in it is. We witness the truth of Plato's attitude ourselves at the centenary of the existence and work of the National Theater in Sarajevo. Prodana nevjesta komična je opera u tri čina, koja je čest gost glazbenog repertoara europskih kazališta. Smetana se prihvatio libreta Karela Sabine i nastala je snažna narodna opera s jednostavnim tipiziranim likovima. Tradicija skupnog pučkog muziciranja i radost igre traje od uvodnog takta do finala. Iako prepuna elemenata češkog folklora zahtijeva jedno modernije čitanje. Radnja kao da pripada nekoj od filmskih formi (sitcom, sapunica…) koje kad gledamo znamo tko je dobar, a tko loš, te kako će se sve završiti. Sve je na neki način unaprijed određeno, predestinirano. Scenografija je filmski set tj. predimenzionirana filmska klapna koja dominira scenom, te nam pruža razne mogućnosti tumačenja prostora. Pojedini dijelovi opere snimaju se uživo, te publika biva uvučena u ambijent kino dvorane. Likovi su vješte komične bravure koje se nađu u zapletima šekspirijanskog tipa. Cijela radnja zapletena je oko mladih zaljubljenika Marženke i Jenjika, čiji roditelji, naravno, ne podržavaju njihovu vezu. U to sve se upliće i Kecal, seoski provodažija, koji u kontekstu našeg scenskog prostora podsjeća na mafijaše iz filma Kum. Unatoč trudu da djeluje opasan, jako je smiješan. Likovi su svjesni da sudjeluju u nekom showu, pa su ponekad svedeni na stilizirane koreografske pokrete. Postignut je svojevrstan odmak od tipične operne geste, osim ako je ne koristimo namjerno s dozom naglašavanja radnje i ironije. Šestero glumaca sudjeluje u operi, te obavlja razne uloge – od scenskih radnika, pomagača, sitnih kriminalaca do cirkusanata u trećem činu, zajedno s još dvoje akrobata. Bitno su osvježenje svojim načinom igre koja nije samo nijema gluma zbog glazbe, već ima i govornih elemenata kada su mogući. Zbor je razigran i rasplesan, vrlo aktivan sudionik zbivanja. Predstava je vrckava audio-vizualna poslastica u kojoj će publika, ne sumnjam, uživati. Naša ”nevjesta” svojevrsna je rođendanska čestitka povodom 75 godina djelovanja sarajevske Opere i 100 godina Narodnog pozorišta Sarajevo. Koristim ovu prigodu da pismenim putem čestitam rođendan Pozorištu i zaželim još barem sto godina divnih predstava i umjetničkog djelovanja.

U povodu operne premijere

Posljednjeg dana novembra sa opernom premijerom budimo nadu da će godina koja je pred nama biti bolja od prethodne, ili ispuniti neka intimna očekivanja. Večeras smo u prilici da se okrenemo izvoru nadahnuća za svakodnevne odluke koje donosimo i djela koja činimo. To je svijet klasične muzike i opere. Muzika je, uz pjesništvo, u antičkoj Grčkoj bila izraz uzvišenog misaonog procesa ljudskog duha. Muze su bile izvor nadahnuća i pokretači kulturnog stvaralaštva; s obzirom da su bile medijum između bogova i ljudi – između vječnog i prolaznog, kroz odabrane na Zemlji slale su svijetu poruke o neprolaznim vrijednostima i vrlinama. Zato vjerujem kako će 75 godina postojanja Opere u bosanskohercegovačkoj teatarskoj kulturi ostati trajna vrlina i činjenica muzičko-scenske umjetnosti. Igramo “Prodanu nevjestu” kao retrospektivni pogled u naše nastajanje, ali sa novim čitanjem koje je okrenuto prema budućnosti, jer smo svjesni da je svako dobro pozorište tražilo svoj put u moderno i avangardno preko tradicije. Zato je Opera vječni scenski izraz magične ljepote i umijeća. Pitagora je smatrao da je muzika tvorac kosmosa, a Platon je bio uvjerenja da će država biti onakva kakva je u njoj muzika. Istinitosti Platonovog stava svjedočimo i sami na stogodišnjicu postojanja i rada Narodnog pozorišta Sarajevo. Neka ova premijerna izvedba najavi novu i bolju epohu za položaj operne umjetnosti u BiH.
